Saturday morning, 11th July, saw the final of the Bowral Club Championship Singles Title take place at the Bowral Bowling Club. Play started at 10am on the North Synthetic green. Play was East West which was probably a little slower than the North South direction which is very compacted and running fast and wide. Playing East West Umpire Jim Neely timed the green at 15.875 seconds on his trusty mobile phone. As both finalists were Club President and Chairman, who would normally mark a final, this priviledge fell to semi finalist Paul Leverett. The finalists were Stephen Della and Bob Crowley. Bob started off with two shots on the first end. Stephen won the next three ends to lead 4-2. Bob continued to play well and won five of the next six ends to take the lead after ten ends 10-6. The game then swung rapidly in Stephens favour and he played solidly to win the next nine ends and take back the lead by ten shots, 20-10. Over the next eight ends each bowler won four each, but twice Stephen won ends with a maximum four shots. This was enough for him to clinch the victory 31-15. A great effort by Bob to reach the final and to give Stephen a good game. Congratulations to Stephen for a fine win and to regain the Singles Championship.
Saturday afternoon saw play in the first round of the Club Championship Pairs. The games were disrupted around 3.30pm by a heavy shower. At this stage Brian Porter with John Edmonds were leading Paul McInerney and Peter Morales by 18 shots to 9. Peter and Paul conceded the match to Brian and John. A similar occurance in the match between Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers who won 38-11 over Richard Denman and Graham Hunt. In this match Richard and Graham had done well to be ahead of their fancied opponents 10-6 after ten ends. From this point onwards the wheels rather fell off as the did not win another end and twice lost six shots on an end. The other two matches both continued to the full twenty one ends after the rain stopped. Ted McPhee and Chris Forrester had a good win over Tony Oakes and Bob Edwards 24-15. Chris won the first four end to take a nine shot lead and this made the difference as both teams scored fairly evenly over the rest of the match. The Final game completed a successful day for Stephen Della who partnered Kevin Stafford for a win over Chris Barritt-Eyles and Dugald Braithwaite. The Stafford team was ahead all the way but the margin of 18-14 shots after seventeen ends was not unsurmountable. However six shots over the next three ends was enough for a 24-15 win. A good day for Stephen Della. Next Saturday the 18th July will see play in the round of sixteen.
