Saturday and Sunday 15/16th August featured the sectional play in the various Zone 5 Singles competitions. Great news for the Bowral Bowling Club was that Dugald Braithwaite won the Section 1 open Singles event at Picton. Playing four matches over the weekend Dugald defeated Matt Hooker of Austral in the section final by 31-21. A great effort and Dugald now moves into the Semi Final on August 22nd (no venue specified) to play Nick Hancott from Hazelbrook Mens Club and hopefully on to the final. Another great effort was from Carl Spilker who despite being fairly new to major competition won his was into the Section 3 Semi Final at Blacktown Workers. Again he performed very well in the Semi but just lost 31-29. The Zone 5 website is divided into the sections so it is easy to make mistakes, so I apologies if not all the results are accurate . Other Bowral players results are as follows. Note also some results have no scores attached and I presume this means a player forfeited or failed to turn up.
Zone 5 Singles; Section 3 Blacktown Workers. Chris Barritt-Eyles. First round bye, lost second round 31-25. Bob Crowley lost to Chris Collins 31-12 Alistair McGhee lost to Kane Shorter 32-23 Zone 5 Section 2 Hazelbrook Bowling Club. Nathan Boyers lost to Rodney Green 31-8 Kevin Stafford lost to Luke Scarri no score.
Zone 5 Reserve Singles. Campbelltown City. Brian Porter lost first round, no score given. Bob Edwards bye first round, lost second round to Juan Enego.
Zone 5 Senior Singles section 3 Bowral Bowling Club. The only Club entrant for this event was Ashley Lewis. After recent rain the Springett rink was unfit for play so luckily the Club has a synthetic rink which allowed play to proceed. As only 15 social players were present the social games could also be played on this rink. Ashley, after a first round bye defeated Phillip Lubke 31-28 on Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning he was up against Blacktown Worker bowler Paul Paorlin. The first half of the game was fairly even with a slight edge to Ashley so that after 10 ends he lead 9-5. For the next 10 ends Ashley continued to hold the advantage and at end 20 lead 19-13. Two end later the score was 20-15 but then the tide turned and Paul won 10 of the next 12 ends to win 33-22. Still a good effort from Ashley and Paul went on in the afternoon to win the final over Michael Stonham of Penrith by the close margin of 31-29. Best of luck to Dugald for his Semi Final next week and hopefully onto the Final.
