Bowral Bowling Club was the venue for the semi final and final of the Club Championship Triples played on Saturday 29th August. The two semi finals were played in the morning. First up was Noel Fraser, Jim Neely and Nathan Boyers versus Robin Staples, Mike Holmewood and Kevin Stafford. First two ends to Kevin but this lead was erased on the third end with four shots to Nathan and followed by a three shot end gave them a four shot lead. This margin was more or less maintained for the next eleven end with Nathan always just in front. On end sixteen Kevin drew level at thirteen all. Nathan responded and achieved a winning break over the next two end with seven shots which placed him in a strong position with a 20-13 lead on end eighteen. Kevin won the final three ends but only by one shot each time with Nathan and team winners 20-17.
The other semi final was Oscar Wahlin, Stephen Della and Dugald Braithwaite against Mick Spong, a very strong substitute for Eric Willacy, Josh Woodcock and Paul Leverett. Paul had a strong start with five shots on the first end. However, the next nine ends strongly favoured Dugald so that at end eight they lead 11-7. Four single shots to Paul over the next four ends leveled the score at eleven all. Dugald replied with four shots next end, From this point onward Paul gained ascendancy winning all the remaining ends to finish comfortable winners 25-15.
After a suitable lunch break the final started at 2pm. Mick Spong, Josh Woodcock and Paul Leverett raced away unchallenged to a handsome 14-0 lead after eight ends. Sometimes after such a good start it is difficult to keep the concentration and momentum going, and this happened on Saturday afternoon.Noel Fraser, Jim Neely and Nathan began a major fight back and won all but two of the next ten ends and from 14-0 down not only caught up but slipped into the lead 17-16. With four ends left the match was getting very close and neither team scored more than one shot in each of those last four ends. End eighteen, one shot to Paul, score 17 all. Again on end nineteen Paul claimed the one shot to ease back into the lead. End twenty, one shot to Nathan and the score back level at 18 apiece. So to the final end and aided by three great lead bowls from Mick Spong Paul’s team finished with that one shot to give them a close 19-18 win. So well done Nathan and team for a great fightback and congratulations to Bowral Club Triples Champions Mick Spong (Eric Willacy), Josh woodcock and Paul Leverett.
