It was with great sadness that members of the Bowral Bowling Club heard of the passing of David Noble on Monday 14th June 2021. David had only been bowling at Bowral for about a year but in this short time made a major contribution to Club activities. David moved to Bowral from Franklin, Tasmania a year and a half ago where he had been a heavily involved in his local bowling club at both bowls and in administration. Taking up bowls again a year ago at Bowral David quickly regained his expertise. While joining in all Club activities David played this years Pennant season in both 6 and 7 grade. However, highlight of his bowling with Bowral was to win this years Minor Singles Title. Playing an experienced and top grade player in Eric Willacy David played brilliantly to win convincingly 31-19. A fitting finale and David will be missed by all at Bowral. Our sympathy to his family and friends,
Congratulations to Bowral Bowling Club Chairman Stephan Della who received an OAM in this years June Honours List. This fantastic recognition was for services to the local community in the field of cancer care. Well done Mr Chairman.
Bowral Club Championship Pairs round one was played on Saturday 19th June in absolutely horrible weather. Windy, wet and frightfully cold, not very nice at all. One of the three matches was forfeited due late arrival so Andy Connor and Terry Butt moved into the second round. The other two matches went ahead and both resulted in extremely comfortable wins. Gary Brown and Russell Knight defeated Glen Giese and Clive Neutze 31-6 while Noel Fraser and Jim Neely had a 29-7 win over Richard Denman and Gordon Lewis.
Round two started Sunday 20th June at 0830. Pretty cold and not very pleasant but not nearly as bad as the day before. Four matches in the morning and four matches to follow in the afternoon to complete the round. One very close game but the other three had results that would be expected. Past Champions Micks Spong and Armstrong had a comfortable 29-9 win over Keith Edwards and Mike Holmewood. Keith was one of four social bowlers who played for pleasure in the foul weather of Saturday, which was to be admired but could have effected his performance early next day taking into account his advancing years and a five second or so difference in green speed. Andy Connor and Terry Butt lost by 31-17 to Champions Stephen Della and Kevin Stafford. Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers dominated their game with a 45-2 thrashing of Steve Day and Dave Riddell. The close game with just a one shot winning margin on the last end was between Gary Brown and Russell Knight versus Noel Fraser and Jim Neely. Jim and Noel had the early advantage and lead 15-10 at the half way point. They then lost the next two ends to trail 16-15 before themselves winning two ends to go back to a 21-16 lead after 15 ends. A score of 23-17 after 17 ends and all was fine in the Neely camp. However, Gary and Russell then won the last four ends to not only draw level but to score the winning shot on the last end. A close match.
So on to Sunday afternoon and after all matches providing no surprises in the morning there were surprise winners in the afternoon. Ashley Lewis and Josh Woodcock avoided a surprise with a win over Ted McPhee and Chris Forrester by the score of 24 shots to 14 shots. The match between Eric Willacy and Paul Leverett against Bob Crowley and Glynn Phillips may have been expected to be very close but Bob and Glynn had a comfortable win by 15 shots with the score 28-13. Peter Cornwall played a “man of the match”game with Mick Flynn who played a great “skips”game making sure that any threat was neutralized. They had an easy win 23-12 over Terry Norwood and Robin Staples. A great effort by Peter Morales and Brian Porter saw them scramble to a two shot win over Tom DeGreenlaw and David Coltman. Brian grabbed the lead 4-3 on the fourth end and at half way still lead 10-6. End 15 David had fought back to level at 12 shots all and then took the lead 15-14 on end 17. Peter and Brain had the best of the final ends to score 5 shots to David’s 2 with a Brian win 19-17. With Zone Four’s to be played next Saturday my understanding is the bowlers are in for a long day with the quarter and semi finals will be played on Sunday 27th June. the quarter finals are;
Gary Brown and Russell Knight v Stephen Della and Kevin Stafford.
Mick Spong and Mick Armstrong V Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers.
Ashley Lewis and Josh Woodcock v Peter Morales and Brian Porter
Bob Crowley and Glynn Phillips v Peter Cornwall and Mick Flynn.
The potential for some excellent games in these match ups especially in the top half of the draw. Come and watch.
Just a final note. I was remiss in not publishing the Club Programme for 2021. This should shortly be remedied and will appear in Bowls Games>Mens Bowling Club> Club Programme with the months June to December displayed. Note that July is scheduled for Handicap Singles and Pairs and Club Championship Triples. However, I seem to remember that the it is proposed to replace the handicap events with minor triples and minor fours. Watch the notice board.
