Saturday 7th August was a bright and cheerful day for the final of the McGrath Major Triples. The competing teams were Ashley Lewis, Kevin Stafford and Mick Spong against Andy Connor, Glynn Phillips and Josh woodcock. First onto the scoreboard with a single shot was Josh and team. This was counter acted by Micks team with 2 shots next end and his team had the better of the next 6 ends to score 8 shots to 6 and have the score 8-6 after 7 ends. Mick then won the next 4 ends, but Josh team kept them honest by only giving away 1 shot each end. Mick now lead 12-6 after 11 ends. Not quite half way as the format has been changed to two bowl triples of 25 ends. Even going over the next few ends with the deficit reduced to 13-10 after 13 ends and Josh keeping in touch and behind 17-14 at end 21. Coming up to the finish and two more single shot ends moved Mick and his team away to a seemly comfortable lead of 19-14 with 2 ends to play. A bit of a lapse on end 24 allowed Team Josh to score 4 shots and close to 1 shot behind with the final end to go. Team Mick continued their solid performance and held steady with 2 shots on the final end and run out deserved winners by 3 shots 21-18. A nice tight final with a good effort from Andy Connor who is relatively new to high level bowls aided by Glynn and Josh. Yet another trophy for Mick Spong and Kevin Stafford while Ashley Lewis has been in all three Major finals this year with a 2 to 1 win loss record which is a great effort.
Next event due to be played is the Moss Vale Motor Group Minor Triples. Entries were due to close on the 1st August but remained open until the 7th August to try and encourage more entries. They have presumably now closed and the draw should , or soon will be, up on the notice board. I would encourage bowlers to look carefully at the dates that the various rounds will be played as it may change from the schedule posted on the entry notice as numbers are low and less rounds will need to be played.
I understand that the repairs to the North rink are scheduled for the 16th of August. However, with Covid 19 still causing many lock downs this may well be delayed.
The good weather previously mentioned for last Saturday the 7th August resulted in a good turn out of social players to add to the 6 championship players. Twenty six social bowlers in fact with 8 on the North Green and 18 on the Springetts green. While Saturday was pleasant the Wednesday prior (4th August 2021) was anything but pleasant with a 9 degree temperature and a 30 knot Westerly reducing the “feels like temperature” to around the zero mark. In the words of John Cummings “Eighteen idiots turned up to play in freezing conditions”. However, everyone seemed to enjoy their game. Unfortunately we played East West which this time of year make the last few ends extremely testing for the tired old eyes of some players. While everyone appreciates the need for rink rotation it is surprising that it is necessary to E-W on a Wednesday when the Ladies go E-W on Tuesdays and Thursdays and almost always play on the synthetic.
The item below is copied from the Bowral Bowling Club August news letter and I guess is the official Club policy. Would still seem to be basically an honour system and no mention of how many beers bought equals a roll up as this seems to be the current system.
