The Bowral Minor Triples were played over the weekend of the 6th and 7th November 2021. Prior to this event social bowls had been held on Wednesday 3rd November with an excellent turn out of 38 bowlers. Saturday also had around 16 social bowlers, though no Grade 2 bowlers other than those playing in the 12 competition bowlers. Prior to the Covid shut down there had been two matches in the Minor Triples with the Phillips team defeating the Crowley team and the Morales team defeating the Staples team while the other two teams in the event had had a bye. Saturday saw Keith Edwards, Glen Giese and Peter Morales against Alex Lamb, Gordon Lewis and Glynn Phillips. The start was even with the score 4-3 in favour of Peter after 6 ends. Then a disaster for this team as they lost 7 shots on the next end to trail 4-10. Over the next 14 ends scoring was pretty even with the Phillips team just the better with 13 shots to Peter’s 11. So without that one poor end the scores would have been very even. Final score was Phillips team 23 and Morales team 13. The other semi final had Peter Cornwall, Viv Gear and Brian Porter play Lynn Boshier, (a last minute substitute for the unvaccinated Carl Spilker) Andy Connor and with Terry Butt advanced to skipper. Early lead was with Terry who lead 4-2 after 4 ends. This time if was Terry’s team who had a poor end losing 5 shots and gifting Brian a 7-4 lead. Porter held this lead with a even game so that at end 13 they lead 12-7. The wheels fell off a bit as this team then lost the next five ends and they also gave away a 5 shot end so the Terry team took over the lead at the 17th end 18-12. Terry’s team scored 3 shots to 2 over the last 4 ends and the final score was 21-14 in favour of the Terry Butt team.
Both final teams were intact for the final on the next day. However, the weather was very showery. The players choice was to play on the grass and there was a delay while the rink was rolled and allowed to dry out a little, with a warning if further rain occurred play would be abandoned. After the two practice ends play commenced with the Terry Butt team having the better of the exchange and leading 5-1 after 4 ends. The Phillips team reduced the margin by 1 shot the next end. End 6 was the last end played before the rain returned. On this end the Glynn team were holding 2 shots before the final bowl from Terry which displaced the closest bowl and rested alongside the jack so that the score for the day was Butt team 6 shots and Phillips team 2 shots. No date has been set for the resumption of the match but it will be influenced by the first round of the Minor Fours which will start next Saturday 13th November.
