SOCIAL BOWLS SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12th
Fifteen very keen bowlers entered the social bowls on Saturday despite the forecast of a possible storm. And the storm did arrive … actually two storms arrived, the first causing a pause in the play after about five ends, the second bringing matters to a close after about 14/16 ends. That said, the bowlers enjoyed their time on the Waratah Green and almost achieved enough to skite about over a beer.
On rink 8, Keith Edwards was swing lead for both Graham Denman and Don Chapman on one side, and Rick Reynolds and Ian Crow on the other. Team Crow won the first five ends, only to lose the next three after the first rain break. Up 6 – 4, they pressed on to lead 12 – 7 after 14 ends and looked to be travelling comfortably. However, Don and his men hit back strongly grabbing 6 shots before the second storm ended the day after 16 ends. The final score had team Chapman in front 13 – 12.
In a pairs match, Barry Werfel and Richard Denman took on Peter Cornwell and Owen Williams. This was expected to be a close one, but when the storm ended play, Peter and Owen were well in front. The ends were fairly tight with only one end reaping more than two shots, but Barry and Richard could only manage to win five of the 14 completed ends. But they did win the 14th end, so it looks as though their comeback was thwarted by the storm! The final score in favour of Peter and Owen was 15 – 6.
The final game was a triples match with Ted McPhee, Terry Norwood and Chris Forrester up against Graham Hartnup, Arnold Lenczuk and skipper Graham Hunt. Team Hunt got the better of the start and led 6 – 1 after four ends. It must have been the benefit of the rain break, because Ted, Terry and Chris really came good winning five of the next six ends and taking the lead by 10 – 7. When the second storm stopped play after 14 ends, Graham and his men had edged back into the lead by 12 – 11. This recovery was due to skipper Graham saving his team with his last bowl on each of the thirteenth and fourteenth ends. Well bowled!
