WEEKEND DECEMBER 10th & 11th

This weekend saw the finals of the Men’s Major Pairs Championship, but first a few reminders:

  1. The Men’s Bowling Committee is still calling for bowlers to nominate for the 2023 Pennants season. The nomination form is on the notice board and both men and women bowlers are asked to place their names on the list. The Committee is still hoping to enter three teams in the Zone 5 Pennants competitions.
  2. The Men’s minor Singles competition will be held in mid January. The notice for this is also on the notice board and eligible bowlers are asked to add their names to the list asap.
  3. BBQs will follow bowling on both Wednesday the 14th and Saturday the 17th. All bowlers and life members are invited to both or either of these events.
  4. For the next month, bowling days will be organised by Graham Hunt, Ted McPhee, Chris Forrester and Bob Crowley. Any queries should be directed to one of these Committee members.

MEN’S MAJOR PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

Saturday was semi-finals day in the Major Pairs Championship. These games got underway at 10am on a warm, pleasant day. The breeze being quite gentle was of little concern to any of the bowlers, and the Waratah Green was running at a comfortable 14/15.

On rink 8, the two Micks, Armstrong and Spong battled it out against Dugald Braithwaite and Mick Anderson. This game went right down to the wire with Dugald and Mick Anderson taking the last three ends to win 21 – 17.

In the second semi-final, Terry Butt and skipper Ash Lewis went head to head against Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers. This match was very close until about the 12th end when Carl and Nathan raced away to a comfortable victory of 24 – 12.

Terry and Ash were up against hot opponents on the day.

The final, therefore, pitted Dugald and Mick Anderson against Carl and Nathan. This intriguing match started around 10am and was not concluded until 3pm. And what a close one it was! On a very warm afternoon, Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers prevailed to become Pairs Champions. The score-line of 18 – 16 indicated just how tight a match this was. Congratulations are due to all four bowlers on a splendid display of bowling, and special congratulations to the victors Carl and Nathan.

SOCIAL BOWLS

On Saturday, eight eager bowlers turned out for social bowls, so two games of pairs were set up.

In the first game, Graham Hartnup and skipper Owen Williams were up against Barry Werfel and Peter Morales. The teams won an end each to start things off, but it wasn’t long before Graham and Owen won five ends on the trot to lead 10 – 5. Barry and Peter then hit back to get within a shot at the fifteenth end and the game was either side’s to win. However, team Williams netted a five shot haul on the seventeenth end which put them in a strong position, and they pressed on the win 21 – 14.

In the other game, Peter Cornwell and Gordon Lewis battled against Terry Norwood and skipper Julie Hayden. At the start, Terry and Julie couldn’t find line or length and found themselves down 7 – 2 after five ends to their better bowling opponents. However, as often happens both found form and five shots on the seventh put them in front 9 – 7. It was a tough battle from that point with all bowlers, but particularly the skippers in fine touch. Julie again produced some magic to salvage a shot when four down and Gordon drew some excellent shots. The last end was a thriller – up five on the card, Terry and Julie just managed to hold on for the slimmest of victories 19 – 18.
