BOWRAL BOWLING SATURDAY APRIL 15th   (Terry Norwood reporting)

A few points to begin with:

  1. The Wilson Green is now open for use. It’s still fairly sluggish, but there is some draw. So the Wilson is open for business for anyone wishing to roll up on the grass.
  2. The Lewis Green is now running much better than some weeks back. It’s running smoother than the Wilson and tracking consistently. We now just need the Lewis marked up freshly for bowls use and it should be back in action.
  3. The Waratah Green is still running well although it is now really fast, somewhere in the high teens. A run over with the machine might freshen it up and knock a couple of seconds of the run.
  4. The women’s bowling committee is to organise a mixed triples competition on Tuesday July 18th. This will be a morning event followed by lunch for those who wish to participate. This is something for the men to add to their diaries if they are interested.
  5. Pennants resumed after the Easter break for the Grade Six team on Saturday. More on that below. The Grade Two team had the bye this week so their next match will be this coming Saturday when they are hosts to the team from Glenbrook.

Pennants Grade Six

The Grade Six men and women were at home to the team from Robertson when the three sides faced off on the Waratah Green. Some weeks ago Robertson knocked over the Bowral team by two points, so the home side was very eager to take revenge and come away with a win.

On rink 8, the four of Reta South, Terry Norwood, Clive Neutze and skipper Bob Crowley took on the four from Robertson skippered by Kevin Pepper. After taking a shot each on the opening two ends, the Bowral four settled into a long, consistent run of success. With plenty of shots in the head and skipper Bob in full control, they won eight ends on the trot and surged to a lead of 15 – 1 by the tenth end. Robertson then scored six shots on the next three ends before Bowral scored three singles to lead 18 – 7 with five ends remaining. And then, unfortunately for Bowral, a change came over the game. With the Robertson bowlers finding better form, and with Bowral not getting enough shots in the head, Robertson won the remaining ends to really push the Bowral four. Fortune favoured Bowral in the end and they stumbled home to win 18 – 14; a win but there remains plenty to work on. Bob Crowley was the standout for the home side, saving a huge number of shots throughout the game and drawing splendidly.

In the match on rink 10, Noel Fraser, Ted McPhee, Dave Coltman and skipper Alastair McGhee battled it out against the Robertson four. After taking a shot each on the first two ends, Robertson blitzed the Bowral four on the third end taking five shots. They followed up with a couple of singles and after six ends led Bowral by 8 – 2. The Bowral boys then scored a couple of twos, but were still well behind at 12 – 6 after ten ends. However, with Alastair and Dave leading the way, the Bowral four then clawed their way back to trail by only three after fourteen ends. And although Robertson snatched a five on the next end, Bowral replied immediately with a four to trail 14 – 18. With five ends to play both teams were right in the game. Bowral won three of those ends but Robertson held firm, maintained their lead and came home winners 21 – 17.

Ted McPhee and Dave Coltman show their styles!

On rink 9, Graham Hunt, Ian Crow, Gail Fraser and skipper Tony Oakes did battle against the Robertson four skippered by that great friend of Bowral bowlers Noel Acton. With Graham Hunt leading well and all the team contributing, Bowral made an excellent start to take the first four ends and lead 7 – 0. Robertson scored two shots on the fifth, but Bowral then won the next three ends to set up a solid 12 – 2 lead. With plenty of chat between Robertson’s Graham Tutt and skipper Noel, they scored five shots on the next two ends and were back in the game. After thirteen ends the score had advanced to 15 – 10, but three to Bowral on the next end put them well in front at 18 – 10. And then, after seventeen ends and Bowral leading 20 – 11, most eyes were following the overall score on the ‘Big Board’. With the other two games finished and the scores cancelling each other out, the result in this game would decide the match. A big finish from Robertson might see them win overall. Cool heads prevailed for Bowral however and, when they scored three shots on the twentieth end, Robertson needed eight on the last for a tie overall. Robertson managed only a single shot win on the last which meant that Bowral took this game at 23 – 16. This result also meant that Bowral won the day overall by 7 shots at 58 – 51.

Leads Graham Hunt and Chris Wortley, and skipper Tony Oakes on the mat!

In the end, it was an excellent day for the Bowral team. With their first win of the season, they took 9 competition points and have got themselves moving on the competition table. They travel to Picton next Saturday and a win there could see them off the bottom of the ladder.

Social Bowls

Saturday 15th April saw nine keen bowlers turn up for a game on what was a beautiful Autumn day. There was a game of pairs as well as a triples with swing bowler.

In the pairs game, Keith Edwards and skipper Mike Holmewood took on Peter Cornwell and Owen Williams. In the end, this turned out to be a fairly one-sided affair dominated by Keith and Mike. They won twelve of the 18 completed ends and ran out convincing winners 28 – 13.

Peter Cornwell in action!

In the triples game, Graham Denman was swing lead for Arnold Lenczuk and Gordon Lewis on the one side and Richard Denman and Mick Flynn on the other. From all reports this was a cracker of a game and finished with the score-line of 19 – 19. Bragging rights equal, and plenty of chat after the game.

With foot fixed, Arnold is now firing again!
