BOWLING WEDNESDAY APRIL 19th    (Terry Norwood reporting)

As usual a few bits of information to start with:

  1. The Grade Two pennants team will be back in action this coming Saturday the 22nd. The team will be host to the Glenbrook side and are keen to build on the victory in the last round. Another win would move the Bowral Bulls off the bottom of the table. Go well fellows.
  2. The Grade Six pennants team will travel to Picton on Saturday for their next match. The win last week has the team moving and another victory would get the sixers moving up the ladder. All bowlers are keen to continue the improved form although Picton will certainly be a tough assignment.
  3. Many thanks to the Bowral branch of the RSL from all Wednesday bowlers and the Mens Bowling Committee for providing the mystery prize on the 19th. As announced by John Cummins, the prize went to the triples team which lost by the largest margin and this trio was Grahame Denman, John Fleming and Paul Rubie.
  4. With all Committee members involved in the pennants matches on Saturday, any social bowls will need to be organised by those who turn up.

Social Bowls

A beautiful autumn day greeted the thirty bowlers who’d listed their names for social bowls on Wednesday. The number of bowlers was fortunate because the Committee was able to organise five games of triples and so set the day up well for the awarding of the RSL mystery triples prize. The Waratah Green, although still running fast, was a true surface and there was little breeze of any consequence.

On rink 8, Ian Duncan, Owen Williams and ‘The Cobbler’ Gordon Lewis took on Graham Hunt, Neville Tanner and ‘Mr Miracle’ himself Peter Morales. After sharing the early ends, Gordon and his team won five consecutive ends to lead 8 – 2. However, at that point, a complete change came over the game as Peter and his men won the next nine, yes nine ends on the trot and advanced to a lead of 17 – 8! Team Lewis did manage to win two of the last five ends, but as they conceded a four on the 20th end, they went down by the dreaded double figure loss – victory to Graham, Neville and Peter by 22 – 12.

Mr Miracle Peter Morales!

The usual 18-ended was staged on rink 9 where Grahame Denman, John Fleming and skipper Paul Rubie traded blows with Keith Scriven, Bill Pope and skipper John Cummins. Now, there had to be something in the water before this game for one of these teams because there can’t be any other explanation for the way this game unfolded! Team Cummins won thirteen of the eighteen ends and they secured three lots of six, one five and two fours along the way! Overall they amassed 44 shots and left their opponents open-mouthed and over-awed! The final score was 44 – 7, and this came after team Rubie led 4 – 1 after three ends! The RSL whiskey was a handy pain relief after the game!

The protagonists Paul and John!

On rink 10, Mike Hook, Terry Norwood and that crafty leftie Mick Flynn took on Joe O’Donnell, Rick Reynolds and another crafty leftie Clive Neutze. This turned out to be a game that see-sawed back and forth as both teams struggled for consistency. Team Flynn led 5 – 2 after three ends, but then three consecutive doubles put Clive and his team in the lead at 8 – 5. A sizzling 6 to Mick’s side was then matched immediately by another sizzling six to Clive as both teams continued their ups and downs! After ten ends, team Neutze led by six shots but Mick and his men fought back and when they netted another 6 on the sixteenth end they jumped to the lead by 23 – 19. The two sides then shared the ends so that, when Clive’s team notched up two on the 21st it was a tied score-line. The skips agreed to an extra end which Mick won with a masterly draw.

Mick saved his best bowl for last, a winning draw!

The triples game on rink 11 saw Harold Wall, Ted McPhee and ‘the unflappable’ Chris Forrester up against Don Coleman, Ian Crow and ‘the skip’ Tony Oakes. The sides shared the first two ends, but team Oakes won the next three ends to lead 5 – 2. Chris and his team then got into the game and had levelled the score at 6 all after eight ends. They then continued to have the better of their opponents and led 13 – 9 after sixteen ends. Tony and his men then hit back strongly scoring six shots on the next two ends to lead 15 – 13. However, in a withering final burst, team Forrester then scored nine shots on the last three ends to run out winners 22 – 15.

The Chris Forrester delivery!

In the final game, Joel Hunt, Don Chapman and ‘the maestro’ Robin Staples battled against Arnold Lenczuk, Paul McInerney and ‘Mr Finesse’ Steven Goddard. In a totally dominant opening to the game Steven and his team won the first five ends to surge to a lead of 12 – 0. With Steven in particularly excellent form, his team continued on its way and they led 20 – 3 after twelve ends. At this point, Robin, Joel and Don all finally found better touch and they won four of the next five ends to reduce the deficit to 13 – 22. That was the extent of the comeback however, as team Goddard won three of the remaining ends and ran out convincing winners at 26 – 14.

Steven is in sizzling form at present!
