SOCIAL BOWLING WEDNESDAY MAY 10th (Terry Norwood reporting)
Some information and reminders to begin with:
- Another reminder about the Men’s Bowls Committee AGM which has been brought forward to Sunday July 2nd. Nominations for all positions close on June 4th and nomination forms can be found on the table beside where visitors sign in to the club.
- Club Membership renewal notices for the 23/24 year will be issued shortly and members are reminded that completing the renewal by June 30th will be at the reduced cost of $120. Renewals after that date will be $160 so the incentive is there to get in early.
- Another reminder, the Men’s Bowls Committee will be holding a presentation evening on Saturday July 15th at 6pm. This will be a partners night and the Women’s Bowls Committee will also be invited. There will be more information on this as the date approaches.
- The Grade Six Pennants season ended last Saturday when Bowral hosted the ‘Ghosts’ from Campbelltown. Although Bowral defeated the Ghosts and gained eight competition points, it wasn’t enough to lift the team from the bottom of the ladder. No doubt the men and women will be working hard for a better result next year.
- The Grade Two Pennants team will conclude its season when it plays host to competition leaders Penrith at 11am Saturday May 13th. A good performance could lift the Bulls into 4th position on the final ladder.
Social Bowls Wednesday May 10th
A magnificent autumn day greeted thirty-two eager bowlers who turned up on Wednesday. It was a perfect day for bowls and a complete contrast to the gale-blown day of the previous week. The bowls were held on the Wilson Green which is slowly improving in quality. The Wilson was running at about 14 seconds and the surface was quite true. There being 32 bowlers, the match committee organised two pairs matches and four triples.
In a triples match on rink 6, Mark Rundle, Arnold Lenczuk and Tony Oakes took on Mike Hook, Joe O’Donnell and Owen Williams. And what a hard fought game this was! The highest score on any of the twenty-one completed ends was two shots! Quite remarkable! Tony and his team had 4 two shot wins and Owen’s team had three. In the end, Tony and his men edged themselves to victory by winning twelve ends to the nine by team Williams. The final score in this tight game was 16 – 12.
Tony and Owen battled it out in a tight one!
In another triples game on rink 5, Denis Lees, Ian Crow and skipper Mike Holmewood battled it out against Ian Duncan, Jim Starkey and Peter Morales. This turned out to be a topsy-turvey game that went down to the wire. Peter and his team leapt out of the box to win the first two ends and lead 5 – 0. Mike’s team won the next three ends and it was game on. The teams then shared the ends through to the halfway stage where team Morales led 8 – 7. Although they lost the next end, Mike’s team won five ends on the trot, but then lost the next three and be down 13 – 14 with two ends remaining. In an punishing finish, team Holmewood scored nine shots on the last two ends to run out winners 22 – 14.
On the next rink, Barry Werfel, Viv Gear and the ‘cobbler himself’ Gordon Lewis took on Keith Scriven, Col Stone and the wily one Mick Flynn. This was another close game where the lead changed a number of times. With a four shot haul on the third end Gordon and his men led nicely at 5 – 1. However, with Mick exhorting his team, they won the next four ends to take the lead. The teams then shared the ends so that by the sixteenth end Gordon’s team had clawed their way to a lead of 16 – 13. And then the hammer blow came; a five followed by a two thrust team Flynn to a lead they were never to surrender. The final score was 22 – 19.
The wily one came out on top this time!
In the last of the triples games on rink 3, Graham Hunt, Richard Denman and skipper Bob Edwards battled it out against Jill Harwood, Paul McInerney and Don Coleman. Although Bob and his team trailed 4 – 5 after three ends, they put together six consecutive wins to scorch to a 16 – 5 lead by the ninth end. To their credit, and with Jill matching Graham in only her 5th game, team Coleman won the next four ends and got themselves back in the match. However, Bob then settled his team and they shared the remaining ends to run out 20 – 14 winners.
Graham Hunt had to battle hard against newcomer Jill Harwood!
The usual 18-ender this week became game of pairs because of a couple of lads missing. On rink 2, Keith Edwards and John Cummins took on John Fleming and Paul Rubie. Playing three bowl pairs each team scored a three at the start and then some heavy coaching by skipper Rubie saw Fleming come to the fore! With Fleming in scorching form team Rubie score a five on the seventh end and forged to the lead. Fleming and Rubie were then never to be headed even after the breaking of the rules and playing twenty ends! The final score was 25 – 16.
John Fleming blitzed the opposition!
In the last of the games, a pairs match, Grahame Denman and Terry Norwood took on Joel Hunt and Graham Hartnup. With Grahame and Terry in pretty good touch, they won the first six ends to take a 10 – 0 lead. Joel and Graham then got on the board winning the next three ends and scoring five shots. However, Grahame and Terry won five of the next six ends and forged to a 21 – 6 lead. They pressed on and, despite dropping an embarrassing 5 shots on the nineteenth end, ended up victorious at 24 – 13.
Grahame Denman had one of his best games!
