Social Bowls Wednesday 12th July

It was a relief to be greeted by a beautiful, calm winter afternoon for the first time in quite a while. The lovely conditions had some bowlers removing their jackets as they basked in the perfect conditions. Thirty-six eager trundlers turned up for the day including a visitor from Adelaide Russel Dunston. Welcome Russell! This was a very convenient number of bowlers as it allowed the Match Committee to arrange six matches of triples, and set them free on the Wilson Green.

On rink 1, Neville Tanner (great to see you back after your NZ sojourn Neville), Don Coleman and skipper Mike Holmewood were up against Arnold Lenczuk, Joe O’Donnell and Owen Williams. Owen’s team made the better start taking three shots on the first end and led 5 – 2 after four ends. Team Holmewood then hit their straps and by the ninth end had forged to the front by 9 – 6. From that point, Owen and his men were, unfortunately, never in the hunt. Mike’s team won all but one of the ends in the second half of the game and went on to a very comfortable 28 – 8 victory.

Don was a happy member of the winning team!

On the adjacent rink, a couple of lefties, Clive Neutze and Bob Edwards skippered Denis Lees and Tony Oakes (Clive’s team) and Ian Duncan and Richard Denman (Bob’s Team). In a blistering start over the first eight ends, Clive and his men won seven ends with no fewer than four scores of three shots, and set up a lead of 16 – 3. To their credit, Bob’s men won the next four ends and looked to be edging back into the match. However, team Neutze regained control and with a couple of threes and an eye-watering five rounded out a comfortable victory of 30 – 15.

Clive was in good form!

In the usual 18-ender on rink 3, Keith Edwards, Graham Denman and skipper ‘the rowdy one’ Paul Rubie battled hard against John Fleming, Bill Pope and skipper ‘the youthful’ John Cummins. Team Cummins got off to a slow start and Paul’s team held the lead after five ends at 4 – 1. They maintained this lead until the eighth end when team Cummins struck top gear and from that point were never headed. John’s team went on to a strong win of 21 – 10. Paul did end up with a smile on his face, however, when he picked up one of the prizes in the after-bowls raffle!

‘The Pope’ backed up his skipper well!

On rink 4, Keith Scriven, Terry Norwood and skipper Mick Flynn took on Wal Markow, visitor Russell Dunston and skipper Robin Staples. Although Mick’s team took a shot on the first end, they were soon under the pump. By the sixth end, Robin’s team led 7 – 4, and after nine ends they had extended that to 14 – 4. Team Staples was bowling well and, quite simply, team Flynn was not! By the sixteenth end, the lead was out to 20 – 7 and the signs were ominous. And, although, Mick’s team had the better of the last few ends, Robin and his men finished on top by 24 – 14. Put simply, each member of Robin’s team out-bowled his opponent, a good recipe for success!

Wal Markow had a good day as lead!

On the next rink, Joel Hunt, Kevin Gould and skipper Chris Forrester were up against Ted McPhee, Graham Hunt and skipper Gordon Lewis. Chris’ team won two of the opening three ends and led nicely at 5 – 1. However, a monstrous six shots on the next end to Gordon’s team, followed by a massive five shots shortly after, had Gordon and his men comfortably in the lead by 14 – 6. By the eleventh end, this lead had been extended to 19 – 7, and team Forrester was gasping for air. However, stung into action, Chris’ team found better form and charged back into the match. Restricting their opposition to low scores however, Gordon’s team clung the the lead and as the ends ran out they were able to hang on and win 23 – 18.

The indomitable Gordon on the mat!

In the final match on rink 6, Ken Looke, Ian Crow and Steve Day battled against Peter Cornwell, Viv Gear and skipper ‘Mr Miraculous’ Peter Morales. Although the teams shared the opening ends, a four shot haul to Steve’s team on the sixth end saw them in the lead by 8 – 2. Peter’s team then hit back strongly and by the eleventh end the scores were locked at 9 – 9. Team Morales then out-bowled their opponents over the next five ends to set up a lead of 19 -11 and looked to be in the box seat. Steve’s team did hit back but finally they ran out of ends and Peter and his men won the day at 22 – 17.

‘Birthday Boy’ Viv Gear had a successful day!
