BBC BROADCAST DECEMBER 24th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
General Information
- The draw for Fours Championship, which will get underway on January 4th, has now been completed and is posted on the notice board. With six teams entered, two sides, team Lenczuk and team Braithwaite will have a bye in the first round and so will not be in action until Sunday 5th. On the 4th, the two matches will be team Spong against team Edwards, and in the other team Staples will take on team Flynn.
- For those who’ve listed their names for Pennants, there will be trial games on Saturdays 18th and 25th of January commencing at 10.30. The format will be three games each of seven ends. Selectors will post the teams and the matchups in early January.
- Because of the Fours Championship and the Pennants trials in January, the Match Committee has decided to defer the Triples Championship until May where there is a break from other competitions. Keep the Saturdays May 17, 24 and 31 free in your diary if you are to play in the Triples.
Social Bowls Saturday December 21st
Eighteen eager bowlers turned out for a roll on a warm, blustery Saturday afternoon. With a good number of barefoot bowlers also in attendance, the greens were humming (thumping?!) to the rhythm of the DJ’s music!
On rink 7, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup, the wily Owen Williams and the even wilier Bob Edwards clashed swords with Mike ‘fish’ Hook, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Steve ‘makeover’ Day. Three all after three ends, six all after six and eight all after eight, this match was as tight as a … Scotsman’s wallet!! It was the twelfth end where the game erupted when Bob’s team notched up an eye-watering EIGHT shotter, yes 8 shotter – I didn’t know the seconds had that many fingers to make the count! Well, eight shots got them a seven shot lead, and when they notched up a four on the eighteenth end, they had the opposition on their knees. Victory to team Edwards 30 – 22.
Owen kept slotting those blue beauties into the head!
On rink 8, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Terry ‘puff’ Norwood and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn butted heads against Mark ‘newcomer’ Barrow, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and mister ebullience Chris Forrester. In a very tight opening, Mick’s team notched up singles on the first three ends and looked to be mastering the flukey breeze. However, they soon realised they hadn’t mastered anything when Chris’ team belted them with a five shotter on the fifth! With Chris in top form, his team led 10 – 5 after ten ends, and looked to be about to run away with the match. It was then, however that all team Flynn members found some form to win five of the next six ends and tie the match up at 13 all. Game on?? No, their run fizzled completely and Chris’ team rolled them flat with fifteen shots over the last five ends! Ouch, embarrassment!! 29 – 13!
Chris had a cracker of a game!
In the final match on rink 9, Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis battled for honours against Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk, Bruce ‘scratched’ Yahl and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze. Both sides scored early for the card to read 4 – 3 to Clive’s team after four ends. It was then that Clive and his men went on a dominant run to lead 11 – 4 after ten. And when they notched up a five shotter on the next end, they had the cobbler and his men on their knees begging for mercy! Well, mercy wasn’t given, but team Lewis did share the ends in the back half of the game and managed to trim the lead in the process. It was still a decisive win however to Clive’s team at 22 – 14, and there was some wound licking and misery over the Hahn Lite.
Clive was in ‘dashing’ form!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
