BBC BROADCAST for SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 28th

BBC BROADCAST for SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 28th       (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some general information to start with:

  1. Rookie bowlers, those who’ve commenced bowling after January 1st 2021, have until 5pm on Tuesday October 1st to nominate for the Rookies Singles Competition. The draw will then be published on the notice board as soon as possible on the Wednesday afternoon.
  2. To date, we only have a couple of pairs nominated for the Mixed Pairs Championship for which the entries close at 5pm on Saturday October 5th. Both the Women’s and Men’s Match Committees are urging anyone interested in playing and yet to find a partner to just list your name individually and the committees will sort you into pairs. So, come on, don’t be shy, put your name down and we’ll find a partner for you!
  3. Bowlers, both men and women, are reminded that over the weekends, there will not be any rink markers in place on any of the greens. The markers will be taken out and placed in the mat box to keep them from tempting the children visitors over the weekend. Saturday bowlers will need to set out markers themselves and then return them to the box when the game is finished.
  4. Bowlers are also reminded that the orange and yellow markers for jack and toucher bowls in the ditch are now to be found in a bucket also in the mat box. Apparently children find them irresistible playthings if left on the banks of the greens, so we’re removing them from temptation when there is no play in action.

Saturday Social Bowls

Two games of social bowls were played over the weekend, one of triples and the other of pairs.

In the pairs game on rink 8, Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan and Mick ‘Potters’ Flynn battled against Richard ‘no denman’ Denman and Arnold ‘rosie’ Lenczuk. And what a one-sided affair this game turned out to be! Despite losing a shot on the first end, Richard and Arnie were soon into stride and on top of their opposition. They led 7 – 3 after four ends, 17 – 3 after ten and had Ian and Mick on the ropes and gasping for breath! Mick and Ian did shake a few of the wrinkles out of their games and managed to share the ends for the remainder of the game. However, even though they notched up an impressive a five shotter to catapult them to double figures, they were never within cooee of the frontrunners. 24 – 12 was the final score in favour of Richard and Arnie.

In the triples game on rink 9, Bruce Yahl, Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel and the maestro Robin Staples faced off against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis. In a whirlwind start, perhaps hurricane, team Staples snaffled two five shotters in the first four ends to lead 12 – 3. It was mouth-watering stuff for the leaders and stifling for those on the receiving end. Gordon’s team did score a couple of shots on the fifth end, but when they lost nine of the next ten ends it was oxygen time! Well, team Lewis must have inhaled something because 24 – 7 down, they grabbed a six shotter on the next end and followed with a three! It looked like a recovery might be on, but the maestro’s team had other ideas and set about restricting the opposition to singles. From 24 – 7, it finished up 24 – 19, much closer but still victory to team Staples.
