Regional Fours Competition

Sunday July 14th saw the finals of the Regional Fours at Bargo. The Bowral four of Ash Lewis, Stephen Della, Mick Spong and Mick Armstrong faced off against Penrith in the semi-final at 8.30am. Although trailing early, the Bowral boys worked their way into the lead and after eleven ends were on top by 16 – 8. Bowral then scored a scorching 7 shotter on the next end and went on to a comfortable victory of 28 – 14.

In the afternoon final against Blacktown Workers, the Bowral four was again trailing early but pegged the opposition back to be 12 all after seventeen ends. Unfortunately for the Bowral team the Blacktown four then applied the screws and went on to win 22 – 12. Congratulations to Blacktown who were too good on the day; but congratulations also to our boys for a stirling performance.

Ash, Stephen, Mick and Mick show their stuff!

Social Bowls Wednesday July 10th

Thirty-nine bowlers turned up for a roll on a typical Bowral winters day, very cold! Six games of triples, one with swinger, and one of pairs were organised.

On rink 7, Bill Meredith, Charlie Dunn and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn battled against Graham Bond, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Mike ‘phlegmatic’ Holmewood. With the benefit of a six shotter Mike’s team led comfortably 14 – 9 after eleven ends. However, not to be outdone, the potter’s team came home with a wet sail in the second half dropping only two shots and winning by 23 – 18.

On the next rink, Jill Harwood, Ian ‘cool’ Duncan and Stephen ‘makeover’ Day took on Alex Christlo, Wal Markow and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis. In a tight one, the score was 7 all after eleven ends. Team Day edged its way to the lead, but a run of six ends on the trot to Gordon’s team had them three in front with one to go. In a cliffhanger, they hung on to win 15 – 14.

In the 18-ender with Owen ‘wily’ Williams as swing, Keith ‘fox’ Edwards and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie faced off against John Fleming and Graham ‘superstitious’ Hartnup. Team Rubie had a corker of a day grinding the opposition into the synthetic surface! Showing no mercy, they won thirteen of the 18 ends and ran out huge winners by 28 – 8!

On rink 10, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and the mercurial Chris Forrester went head to head in a challenge match against Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt, Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and Terry Norwood. Play was tight early with the scores locked 4 all after four. Team Norwood then worked their way to the lead, and with some fine bowling went on to a strong victory by 23 – 10. Ah, very sweet!

In the pairs match, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and visitor form Geelong Leigh Butcher took on Charles Coode and the ebullient Bob Crowley. Richard and Leigh burst from the blocks to lead 17 – 3 after nine ends and “oxygen” was the call. Bob and Charles did mounted a brief comeback, but team Butcher finished very strongly to run out victors by 27 – 14.

On rink 11, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze tussled with Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Russell Dunstan and the maestro Robin Staples. Dasher’s team dominated the opening to lead 7 – 1 but by the ninth end it was 7 all. By the sixteenth end Robin’s team had hit the lead, but Clive’s team won the last five ends and went into the Club smiling as 27 – 16 winners.

For rink 12, the dog must have eaten the card as well as the homework . . . we know the difference was two shots in favour of Bob Edward’s team . . . more info shortly!

Social Bowls Saturday July 13th

Eighteen players turned out on a slightly warmer day . . . only slightly! Three games of triples were organised, and we have all three cards!

On rink 8, Graham ‘superstitious’ Hartnup, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Peter ‘torpedo’ Watson battled against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Terry Norwood and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. Play was tight to start with for Mick’s team to lead 4 – 3 after five ends. From there, Peter’s team dominated proceedings and went on to win 20 – 9. Team Watson all bowled well and team Flynn didn’t . . . end of story!

In the next game, Keith ‘fox’ Edwards, Ian ‘cool’ Duncan and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis faced off against Andy Conner, Arny ‘rosie’ Lenczuk and Steven ‘suave’ Goddard. The scores were level after five ends and things looked tight. Not so however, as in the back half Steven’s team notched up consecutively a sixer and a seven shotter! Team Goddard then sailed on to a handsome victory by 35 – 15.

In the final game on rink 10, Barry Werfel, Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and Steve ‘makeover’ Day took on Jill Harwood, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and the ebullient one Bob Crowley. It was all team Crowley to start with as the led 10 – 1 after eight ends. However, a six shotter on the tenth end had Steve’s team back in the hunt. Bob then steadied his players and they came home the better to win 24 – 17. Rink 10 really isn’t the lucky one ambi!
