BBC BROADCAST PENNANTS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 15th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Saturday saw the Bowral side travel to Taralga to take on the competition leaders the Taralga Tigers. Two inches of rain had fallen overnight and there was some concern about what the green would present. It was really pleasing to find that the green now under the care of Stuart Hayman was in very fine condition, a vast improvement over previous years. Stuart, working on a voluntary basis, has removed all the weed and has rolled out a very good bowling surface running at about 14, even after the rain! So, the results of the three team matches were:
Bruce Yahl, Terry Norwood, Dave Coltman, Al McGhee 24 Vs Taralga 19
The Bowral four made a sound start to lead 4 – 1 after four ends. However, the locals snatched a four on the next end and then racked up three threes on their way to a 15 – 10 lead after twelve. It was then that the Bowral boys tightened matters and with Al converting well and the others chipping in, won six ends on the trot to lead 23 – 15. Taralga grabbed three on the nineteenth to raise a few concerns, but Bowral came home victors at 24 – 19.
Al McGhee is having a great season as skip!
Gordon Lewis, Peter Flight, Chris Forrester, Ash Lewis 12 Vs Taralga 28
Bowral were under the pump from the outset in this game with Taralga winning the opening six ends to lead 9 – 0. Bowral grabbed a very welcome six shotter on the seventh, and by the eleventh were still in touch at 9 – 12. It was then that Bowral struggled to get bowls in the head, and went down end after end. Losing eight consecutive ends had them in real strife, and although they won the last two ends, they went down by sixteen shots.
Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Gail Fraser, Stephen Day 27 Vs Taralga 18
Bowral opened with a four and after five ends led 5 – 4. With Noel in great touch as lead and Gail gliding in shots at three, Bowral kept the pressure on the home team. Leading 14 – 7 after eleven ends, Bowral still led at 16 – 11 after sixteen, but when they grabbed a six shotter on the next end, they were in a commanding position. However, Taralga hit back immediately taking seven shots on the next two ends and really tightening the game. Undaunted, Bowral held firm to close out the game.
Noel and Gail Fraser were in excellent form at Taralga!
So, overall, Bowral won two rinks, but went down on the overall by two shots, 63 – 65. So Close but so far! Taralga took 8 competition points from the encounter to the two points for Bowral. With their third consecutive win, the Picton side is now on top of the competition ladder closely followed by Taralga with Bowral now tagging along in third position. In the next round, Bowral will play host to Picton, and this should be a fine match; hopefully Bowral can get back into the winning circle.
The teams for the match against Picton are:
Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Gail Fraser, Stephen Day
Reta South, Chris Forrester, Gordon Lewis, Ash Lewis
Bruce Yahl, Terry Norwood, Dave Coltman, Al McGhee
Please mark off your names asap so that we can be sure that all is ready for Saturday.
