BBC BROADCAST PENNANTS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 22nd         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Saturday saw the Bowral Grade Six Pennants side play host to the ‘razorbacks’ from Picton in the fourth round of the pennants season. At the start of the day, Picton was leading the competition table with Bowral lying in third position and Taralga wedged between them in second. The day had opened with heavy cloud and mist, but by 1 o’clock the sun was in full force and the humidity was quite heavy. Bowral won the toss and elected to take the mat and open proceedings. The results of the three matches were:

Team 1   Bruce Yahl, Terry Norwood, Dave Coltman, Al McGhee   20   Vs   Picton   26

In this match, Picton had much the better of the opening ends to lead 9 – 1 after five ends. Bowral then won a couple of ends but were under pressure when they dropped a four on the eighth end. The Picton skip and third were in fine form consistently snatching the initiative away from the Bowral leads. Matters didn’t change in the back half of the game with Picton picking up shots until the last two ends. A great conversion from skip Al on the twentieth, and a monstrous six on the last, with all Bowral bowlers in the head, gave some respectability to the score.

Team 2   Reta South, Chris Forrester, Gordon Lewis, Ash Lewis   23   Vs   Picton   15

With Reta and Chris ensuring Bowral had shots in the head, the home side had much the better of the opening to lead 8 – 3 after seven ends. And then a four shotter on the tenth, followed immediately by a five, put Bowral in the box seat at 18 – 7 going into the run home. However, the Picton bowlers found better touch from the twelfth, and slowly edged closer as the ends dwindled away. Still in front, but only by six, Bowral grabbed a very welcome three shots on the twentieth to secure the victory.

Reta had a fine game as lead to put Bowral in the head!

Team 3   Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Gail Fraser, Stephen Day   24   Vs   Picton   7

In the final game on rink 10, Bowral made an excellent start to lead 10 – 0 after six ends. All Bowral bowlers were firing well, but it was Jim who was tucking those green bowls closest to the jack. Picton then netted a four on the seventh, but the ten shot lead had been restored by the twelfth. And when the home team won the next seven ends, they had the game in the bag. Overall, Bowral dropped only four ends in a dominant display. All bowled well for the home team and they kept pressure on the visitors with bowls in the head constantly.

Jim was back to his best as Bowral dominated this match!

So, given those match results, Bowral took nine competition points from the encounter to the one point for Picton. This means that Bowral and Picton are level on competition points on the table, and given that Taralga was beaten 1 – 9 by Bundanoon, Bowral now sits atop the ladder with superior shot difference. Great stuff! Next Saturday, Bowral will be host to the side from Robertson and will be hoping for a positive outcome. Bowls in the head boys and girls!
