BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY APRIL 19th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Odds and ends for a start:
- Pennants is on hold over Easter and will resume with the last round for the Bowral Grade Six side on April 26th. Currently, Bowral is in second position and a win at Robertson in the final game will see the team finish in that position.
- Keith Edwards, ninety-four years young, is still in hospital on the mend after dealing with a bout of pneumonia. All members wish Keith a full recovery and are looking forward to his being back on the green in the not too distant future.
- Entry forms for the Club Major Triples Championship and a Handicap Mixed Pairs are currently on the notice board awaiting entries. Come on bowlers, get organised and get behind these two competitions.
- Also on the notice board is an entry sheet for the Can Assist charity day run by the Women’s Bowling Committee. This is a very worthy cause so let’s all get involved.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee will hold its next meeting at 10.15 on Wednesday April 23rd. Minutes from the meeting will be posted as soon as possible after the meeting.
Social Bowls Saturday
Eighteen eager bowlers turned out for social bowls on what was a glorious day to be on the green. The temperature was mid-twenties and the breeze from anywhere between north-east and south west made its presence felt in minor ways only. Three games of triples was the order of the day.
On rink 8, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Terry ‘preston’ Norwood and the maestro Robin Staples battled for honours against Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Chris ‘ebullience’ Forrester. Robin’s team got away to a flier winning the first five ends and racking up ten shots. Chris’ team then won a couple of ends but were still on the wrong end of the scorecard at 3 – 13 after ten ends. They hung in however, and a four shotter on the fifteenth end saw them reduce the deficit. Not to be denied though, Robin’s team held firm and with his second having a solid game, Robin saw them home at 22 – 18. A great game!
On rink 10, Barb ‘stretch’ Wainberg, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn tackled Brian ‘misère’ Bailey, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. Although they dropped a shot on the first, Dave’s team hit the headlines with a seven . . . yes a SEVEN SHOTTER on the second to totally knock the wind out of the opposition! Shaken but not sunk, Mick’s team got the score back to within three shots at 8 – 11 by the tenth. They were still within three after the sixteenth, but Dave’s trio closed out the game when they won the last five ends. The score finished up 24 – 12.
In the final game, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and the venerable Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis took on Mark ‘straw’ Barrow, Richard ‘ten pin’ Denman and Bob ‘wily Edwards. Bob’s team led the way winning the first four ends and leading 6 – 0. With the three Gs (Graham x two and Gordon) struggling, team Edwards enjoyed superiority and led 11 – 1 after seven ends. Smelling salts time for the three Gs!! Well something worked, because G Hartnup started to maul the jack and the other two G’s found better touch and they took the game by the scruff. The back half was all theirs and they steamed home to a solid 24 – 15 win. What a turnaround!!
