BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY AUGUST 19th (Terry Norwood reporting)
Pennant News
With both the Grade Two and Grade Four Pennant Teams having byes, there was no Pennant action this weekend. Grade Two has another bye on the 26th August while the Grade Four team will play host to the powerful team from Taralga. We wish the Bowral Bulls good bowling for that encounter.
Rookie Pairs
Unfortunately, the Rookies Pairs competition set down for Saturday attracted a very small field of four teams. Given there were only the four teams, the semi-finals were set for 9am with the final in the afternoon. Again unfortunately, one of the sides was forced to withdraw due to circumstances, so there was only one match in the morning with the final to follow. Each game of the competition was set down as a three bowl pairs match over eighteen ends. And as another challenge to the bowlers, Mother Nature chipped in with a strong westerly wind which took at least 10 degrees off the temperature.
On rink 9, the semi-final saw Arnold Lenczuk and skipper Peter Cornwell up against Terry Norwood and Chris Forrester. Terry and Chris had the better of the opening taking the first four ends, setting up a good lead of 7 – 0. Peter and Arny then won a three shot end but two ends later they were down 3 – 10. Arny then changed hands and Peter found a better line so that by the end of the tenth end they were only one shot down at 9 – 10. However, Terry and Chris tightened their games to the extent that they won the next seven ends to take a strangle hold on the game. After the allotted eighteen ends Terry and Chris prevailed with the score at 19 – 12.
Chris Forrester and Terry Norwood semi-final victors!
In the afternoon, the final found Scott Kennon and Terry ‘knuckles’ Butt in battle against Terry Norwood and Chris ‘unflappable’ Forrester. The youngsters Scott and Terry won the first couple of ends, and when the opposition nudged the jack to them on the fourth end, they led 4 – 1. In a very tight match in challenging conditions, Scott and Terry held the lead at 7 – 3 after eight ends. Team Forrester then had its best run with three singles and were within a point of the lead. The ends continued to be very tight but the younger pair kept coming up with the goods and went to the last end four shots up. Scott and Terry then closed out the game with a single on the last and a final score-line of 13 – 8. Congratulations go to Scott and Terry who prevailed in a very low scoring game.

Social Bowls
Despite the very cold conditions, twelve bowlers turned out for Social Bowls. The twelve were organised into four games of pairs.
On the outside rink of the Waratah Green, newcomer Alex Crowther was paired with Andy Connor against Graham Hartnup and Owen Williams. Graham and Owen got off to a flying start to lead 6 – 1 after three ends. However by the seventh, their lead was only one shot. Andy and Alex kept the pressure on, but their opponents managed to keep in front on the scorecard. The final score after eighteen ends was 18 – 14
On rink 11, Barry Werfel and Richard Denman took on the two Ians, Duncan and Crow. Barry and Richard had much the better of the early ends and led 6 – 3 after seven. The Ians then hit back and trailed by only one shot at 8 – 7 on the eleventh. When time was called after fourteen ends the Ians were in front 12 – 9
The pairs game on rink 10 was a no holds barred battle to the twenty-first end between team Lewis (Arnold Lenczuk and Gordon Lewis) and Kevin Stafford paired with newcomer and former Sydney bowler Craig Norman. Despite dropping three shots on the first end, Arny and Gordon had themselves in front 5 – 3 after four ends. Kev and Craig then hit their straps and by the eleventh were up 11 – 8. Showing true fighting grit and great bowling skill, team Lewis won five of the next six ends to lead 17 – 12. In response, Kev and Craig fought back skilfully winning the next two ends to trail by two. Then the next end was decisive: Kev and Craig took five shots and, with a single on the last took victory at 21 – 17. Gordon is still mumbling about that five on the twentieth end!
