BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY AUGUST 3rd (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Back after a short break, so let’s start with a few bits of information:
- The AGM of the Men’s Bowling Committee will be held at 10am on Sunday August 18th. Nominations have now closed, and members can be informed that there will not be necessary to conduct a ballot as there are only sufficient nominations to fill positions. Office bearers for the year 24/25 will be announced at the AGM.
- Members are advised that nominations are now being called for the Board of the BBC Ltd. The election will be held in September so members are encouraged to think about who they wish to participate in the running of the Club. Nomination forms can be found at the entrance to the Club where visitors sign in as they come into the Club.
- On medical matters, Brian Bailey (hip), Neville Tanner (knee) and Robin Staples (eye) are all recovering from recent operations. Our thoughts are with them and we wish them a speedy and full recovery.
Nepean Highlanders Regional Events
Regular readers will know that Bob Crowley and Kevin Stafford recently represented BBC in the Senior Men’s Pairs Regional competition and had reached the semi-final. Unfortunately for the Bowral boys, they ran into a red-hot team from Blacktown Workers on Sunday July 28th in the form of R Byrn and L Serle. The Blacktown pair put the Bowral boys to the sword and came out on top 30 to 5. Byrn and Serle then went on to win the final in the afternoon, so they were obviously in top form. Congratulations to Byrn and Serle on their win, and congratulations to Bob and Kevin for working their way into the semi.
Social Bowls Wednesday July 31st
In a pairs match on rink 8, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn took on Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Joe O’Donnell. Joe and Graham proved far too strong for their opponents winning fourteen of the twenty-one ends and racking up win of 28 – 11. Ouch, where’s the oxygen!
In the 18-ender pairs game, Bill ‘the’ Pope and ‘junior’ Cummins battled for bragging rights against John Fleming and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie. In a close one, John and Paul got their noses in front early and managed to keep them there . . . just! They won nine ends to seven and finished 16 – 12 in front.
On rink 10, Wal Markow, Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards faced off against Alex Christlo, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and the cobbler Gordon Lewis. Down 3 – 8 after seven, Bob’s team then swamped the Lewis boat scoring 19 shots on the next seven ends and sailed on to win 31 – 17. It must be the new bowls Bob!!
On the next rink, Barry ‘smurfel’ Werfel, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Richard ‘denman’ Denman played Grahame Denman, Paul McInerney and ‘Rosie’ Lenczuk. Team Denman started slowly but a six shotter on the 8th end got them going. It was neck and neck most of the way but team Lenczuk finally got home 19 – 16.
In the last game, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Ian ‘cool’ Duncan and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales took on Jill Harwood, Graham Hartnup and Dave Charlesworth. In an extraordinary opening the teams exchanged five shotters on the first two ends. However, Peter’s team then roared away leaving the opposition in the dust. Final score was 29 – 15.
Social Bowls Saturday August 3rd
On a clear, sunny day, twenty bowlers hit the Waratah Green. There was no breeze to speak of so conditions were just about perfect for an afternoon of bowls.
In a pairs game on rink 8, Andy Connor and Al McGhee faced off against Arnie ‘Rosie’ Lenczuk and Dave Coltman. With a five shotter on the second end, Dave and Arnie got the better of the opening, but by the fifth end there was only one shot separating the teams. However, with heads down and tails up Dave and Arnie won seven of the next eight ends to lead 14 – 5. Far from done, Andy and Al won four of the next five ends and were breathing down the necks of their opponents. Cool and calm, Dave and Arnie held on to win 16 – 13.
On the next rink, Graham Hartnup, and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze battled against Richard ‘denman’ Denman and George Hindi. In a blistering start, Clive and Graham led 10 – 2 after five ends and looked in fine shape. However, George and Richard found better touch and by the eleventh end the score was locked at 11 all. And then a five shotter on the twelfth end gave the Hindi team the edge and a four shot lead that they were not to surrender. Graham and Clive battled strongly but George and Richard had a grip on the game and got home 24 – 17.
On rink 10, Jill Harwood, Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn tussled against Grahame Denman, Terry ‘PNE’ Norwood and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis. Both sides scored early, but it was Gordon’s team that edged to a lead of 9 – 5 after eight ends. It was then that team Lewis asserted authority over the game winning the next six ends and swamping their opponents to lead 21 – 5. To their great credit, Jill, Peter and Mick fought hard over the last seven ends but to no avail. The final score was 32 – 13 and skipper Gordon insisted that it be reported that his second had a strong game. So did Gordon!!
In the final game, Graham Bond, Ian ‘cool one’ Duncan and Stephen ‘makeover’ Day found themselves in a real battle against Barry ‘Smurfel’ Werfel, Harold ‘stentless’ Wall and the wily one Bob Edwards. In a ripping start Bob’s team blitzed the opposition to lead 9 – 1 and had Stephen looking for divine intervention and calling for the smelling salts! Something worked as they got themselves into form and with a five shotter on the fifteenth end hit the lead ay 17 – 15. However, Bob then rallied his troops to win the next five ends and they jogged home at 23 – 18.
