BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY DECEMBER 20th (Terry Norwood at the desk!)
Fascinating bits to reflect upon for a start:
- The final of the Major Fours Championship was conducted on Saturday with the players rolling out on the Wilson Green, which, although quite heavy and running around 11, had survived the overnight rain very well. More on the game below.
- The draw for the Consistency Singles has now been undertaken and will be posted on the notice board in the next couple of days. Please note that the bowlers who receive a bye in the first round will be required to act as markers for the first round games on January 3rd, and this includes Robin Staples, Cameron New, Graham Hartnup, Graham Hunt, Wal Markow, Barb Wainberg, Shane Harvey and Clive Neutze. Handicaps have now been allocated to bowlers so that lesser experienced bowlers get a start from those more experienced.
- Looking ahead, bowlers are alerted that the Chris Benton ‘brain cancer charity event’, is set down for Saturday February 7th. Please consider being involved as this has always been a great event with money raised going to the wonderful cause of brain cancer research. Let’s get that date in our diaries!!
- Bowlers are reminded that social bowls will be organised on Xmas eve, Wednesday 24th, so come along, have a bowl and enjoy a Christmas drink to get the festive season underway!
- The draft minutes of the Men’s Bowling Club executive meeting on the 17th have now been posted on the notice board. Happy reading!!
Major Fours Championship Final
Saturday 20th saw the four of Gordon Lewis, Ross Barber, Al McGhee and Ash Lewis hit the green to take on the might of Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Dugald Braithwaite and Oscar Whalin, and ends were very tight to begin as Ash’s team led 4 – 2 after six ends. It was then that Oscar’s four hit their straps and began to get the better of their opposites. By the fourteenth end, they had advanced to a lead of 15 – 7, and, with seven ends to play, looked to have proceedings in hand. However, Ash and his men had other ideas as they then grabbed a five and a four, and by the nineteenth end had surged to a lead 22 – 15. In a burst of five great ends, team Lewis had torpedoed the opposition, and they finished the twenty-first end with plenty in hand to win the championship 23 – 17. Congratulations to the champion four that came from well behind to swamp a very high calibre opposition.

The victors, Ross Barber, Al McGhee, Ash Lewis and Gordon Lewis!
