BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY DECEMBER 30th

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY DECEMBER 30th      (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some titbits of info:

  1. The Men’s Bowling Club will continue to organise Wednesday and Saturday social bowls through January for those who are interested. Please ensure you have your name listed on the sheet or phone by 11.30.
  2. The Men’s Match Committee will continue to use the Waratah Green for social bowls, but will monitor  the run of the Wilson Green now that it has been re-opened. The Wilson Green is still very slow and has a few rough areas, so the social bowlers prefer to bowl on the synthetic of the Waratah.
  3. On Wednesday February 14th, a group from the ACT will be visiting Bowral Bowling Club to join in a game of bowls. Details of the day have not yet been decided, but will be advertised as soon as they are available.
  4. For those bowlers who listed their names for pennants competition bowls, training and drills will commence in latish January. These exercises will take place on Saturday mornings, so keep your eyes out for the starting date.
  5. Several bowlers have now participated on more than forty occasions in social and competition bowls at Bowral Bowling Club (ie games for which they have paid green fees) and are edging closer to the fifty games which will make them eligible to participate in social bowls free of green fees. The participation numbers for all bowlers will be placed on the notice board on Wednesday January 3rd.

Social Bowls Saturday December 30th

Twenty-three eager bowlers turned out for social bowls on the last bowling day of 2023. And what a cracker of a day weather-wise it was with mid-twenties temperature and and a cooling breeze; perfect! There were no excuses for any wayward bowls, especially the wrong bias one sent down on rink 9 by TN! The Match Committee organised four games of triples, one of which had a swing lead bowler to round off the numbers.

On rink 10, Grahame ‘smurf’ Denman was swing lead bowler for Ian ‘cool’ Duncan and Tony ‘flick’ Oakes as well as Peter Charnley and Ian ‘cris/cros’ Crow. Both teams scored early to be 3 – 3 after three ends. However, with visitor Peter Charnley in fine form, Ian’s team won the next three ends and raced to a lead of 13 – 3. Tony then got his team rolling and by the eleventh end had reduced the deficit to four shots at 11 – 15. However, from that point it was all team Crow as they won all but three of the final ten ends. The final score to team Crow was 29 – 13. Ouch!

Crook knee and all, ‘cris/cros’ Crow came out on top! Imagine what he could do with two good knees!

Rink 7 saw the clash of the Lewis titans as Greg and Ash battled for Christmas bragging rights while taking dad along with them. Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis joined Greg Lewis while Al McGhee and Dave Coltman propped up Ash Lewis. And what a cracker of a game this was! Greg’s team had the better of the opening ends and led 4 – 1 after four. In fact, they dominated the first half of the match to lead 14 – 3 after eleven ends. Ash, Al and Dave were calling for more than oxygen at this point! Whatever the elixir was that they found worked a treat and they stormed back to hit the lead 17 – 15 with three ends remaining. However, their run fizzled and Greg’s team escaped with a skinny win at 22 – 18. Great game!

Ash Lewis found the ‘elixir of youth’ to spark a come back!

On rink 8, Barry Werfel, Peter Cornwell and skipper Owen ‘wily Scot’ Williams took on Keith ‘fox’ Edwards, Arny ‘black foot’ Lenczuk and Mick ‘potter’ Flynn. Owen’s team made much the better start and swooped to a lead of 9 – 1 after four ends. However, Mick then steadied his team winning six of the next seven ends and to be only two shots down at 9 – 11. Owen’s team then regained some form and by the sixteenth end held a five shot lead at 16 – 11. It was then, unfortunately for team Williams that the wheels came off the cart completely! Mick’s team won all the remaining ends to win the game 22 – 16. To the casual observer, Keith ‘the fox’ and Arny were in close over the final ends.

Keith ‘the fox’ is in great form, and Arny had those ‘Rosie’ bowls singing!

In the final triples match on rink 9, Ted Mc Pee, Chris ‘the’ Forrester and skipper Bob ‘wily’ Edwards battled for honours against Jill Harwood, Terry Norwood and skipper ‘maestro’ Staples. Team Edwards won the opening two ends, but when they dropped five shots on the third, the signs were ominous. With Robin in terrific form, his team then ground out the ends to lead 11 – 3 after eight. Bob’s team then had a run of three successful ends and got the deficit back to three shots by the eleventh end; at this point it looked to be anyone’s game. However, with Robin continuing to take shots away from the opposition, team Staples got the upper hand in the contest. They won seven of the last nine ends to register an impressive win at 22 – 10. All bowlers had solid games, but the standouts were Jill who had a very good game as lead and the ‘maestro’ who was superb all game.

The Maestro had a superb game!
