BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY FEBRUARY 14th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
For your consumption, some morsels to savour:
- Pennant trial games were held on Saturday with likely teams getting a workout under friendly fire. The Pennant competitions commence on the 28th February with Grade Six at home and Grade Seven travelling to Robertson. More on that below.
- Social bowls on the past couple of Wednesdays have been very well supported with forty or more bowlers turning out. That’s great to see, so let’s keep that rolling on.
- For the information of members, the draft minutes of the latest Men’s Bowls Committee meeting will be posted on the notice board at the Club today Sunday afternoon.
- Members are reminded that Club caps/bucket hats are available for purchase with Ian Duncan being the man to contact. $25 is the cost of each, and cash only is the deal.
Saturday Bowls/Pennant Trial Games
On rink 4 of the Wilson Green, Peter Flight, Barb Wainberg, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee got off to a slow start against Dennis Beatty, Peter Martin, Mick Fisher and Dugald Braithwaite to trail 2 – 15 after ten ends. With especially Dennis and Dugald in great form, the score became 18 – 5 after fourteen, but, to their credit, team McGhee dug in to to win six of the final seven ends. However, the deficit had been too great and Dulgald and co notched up the win at 19 – 14.
On rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Noel Fraser, Dave Charlesworth, Oscar Whalin and Ash Lewis took on Arnie Lenczuk, Richard Denman, Mick Flynn and Gordon Lewis and the scores were locked at 5 all after three ends. Ash’s team grabbed a five shotter on the seventh but a three on the tenth to Gordon’s boys put them square at 12s. Gordon’s team then continued to have the better of things until a final burst over the last four ends saw Ash’s boys home at 23 – 19.
In the next match, a two-bowl triples of 25 ends, Tisi Lear, Charles Coode and Terry Norwood had the better of the early ends against Ricci Wilson, Graham Hunt and Robin Staples to lead 9 – 2 after five. This became 10 – 3, but then, with Graham firing in some fine draws, team Staples gained the upper hand to lead 20 – 14 after seventeen ends. From that point, the game was a really tight affair with team Norwood clawing its way back. Two down with the last end to play, they grabbed a double and snatched a draw. Robin reckons his opposite had a pretty fair game.
In a three-bowl pairs game on rink 11, Mike Hook and Ian Duncan opened brightly to lead Shane Harvey and Ted McPhee 5 – 1 after four ends. However, Ted and Shane responded well and, by the tenth end, there was only one shot difference. Ian and Mike then won the next four ends to lead 18 – 9, but a run of six ends saw Shane and Ted leading by two with the last to play. In a tight finish, they held on to win by a shot at 20 – 19. What a good one!
