BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY FEBRUARY 7th

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY FEBRUARY 7th         (Terry Norwood back at the desk . . . finally!)

Some sumptuous goodies to dine on for a start:

  1. The executive of the Men’s Bowls Committee will hold its next meeting on Wednesday 11th February at 10am, and the draft minutes of that meeting will be posted on the notice board in the days following. If members have any issue to discuss at any time, please feel free to speak with any member of the executive which includes Terry Norwood (President), Peter Flight (Vice-President), Robin Staples (Treasurer) and committee members Ian Duncan, Richard Denman, Graham Hunt, Chris Forrester, Ted McPhee and Gordon Lewis (ex-officio).
  2. The Consistency Singles Competition concluded last Wednesday 4th when Robin Staples battled out the final against Terry Salter. More on that below.
  3. Pennants Competitions commence on February 28th, and Bowral will be represented in both Grade Six and Grade Seven. Although trials have commenced, the selection panel has kept the nomination schedule open for any member to indicate willingness to participate. We need an extensive list of players so that we’ll have each of the teams covered throughout the season. Bowral is ‘in it to win it’ so, in the end, selections will be based on merit.
  4. As advertised in the newsletter ‘Jack Chat’, the Committee has articles of the old (red) uniform available for purchase at reduced prices. Committee member Ian Duncan is the man to see, and keep in mind that these are cash sales only.
  5. According to the records of the Committee, all members have now been issued with their new uniform. If you have not received your shirt, Peter Flight or Ian Duncan are the men to contact.

Consistency Singles Final

Robin Staples and Terry Salter took to the Waratah Green to fight out the final of this popular competition, with Robin, because of the handicap system, having to concede Terry a start of 16 points. Or rather, Robin had to start from minus 16 (-16) as both bowlers chased points to the target of 130. And with ten points up for grabs on each end (4, 3, 2 and 1 for the closest four bowls to the jack), the chase was going to be an interesting one. Robin started well with 8 points to Terry’s 2 on the first end, but it took him another three ends to get his score into positive territory. Meanwhile Terry kept sharing the points and retaining the lead. It wasn’t until Robin notched up consecutive 10 pointers that he hit the lead for the first time, and had Terry under the pump. In fact, from that point, Robin was never headed . . . Terry hung in well to share a number of ends, but Robin ground out the victory on the twenty-fifth end.

Pennants Trials

The Grade Six Pennants side travelled to Bargo to take on the Grade Four local team in a trial on Saturday 7th. Unfortunately, the weather intervened to bring a close to proceedings three parts through the afternoon with each of the Bowral fours acquitting themselves very capably. There were many very encouraging signs for the Bowral combinations for the coming season, but Grade Seven will put them to the test before the start of the season proper!

Bowral Grade Seven Pennants selections played host to the Bargo Grade Six players and had a very useful hit out. So close was the encounter that Bowral was able to sneak home on the overall count by a single shot, 67 – 66!! Although it was only a trial, the games were taken very seriously and all the bowlers hung around anxiously as the final few ends were rolled out. Good but serious fun!
