BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY JANUARY 13th

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY JANUARY 13th     (Terry Norwood at the desk)

A couple of reminders:

  1. The Chris Benton memorial event will be staged on Saturday February 3rd commencing at 12.30. Keep in mind that the proceeds from this day will be donated to Brain Cancer Research, an eminently worthy cause. The nomination sheet is posted on the Men’s notice board for bowlers to list their names. You can put yourself down as a single entry and leave it to the Bowls Secretary to put you in a fours team, or you can form a full team and list all the names.
  2. Also on the notice boards, women’s and men’s, are schedules for bowlers to enter names to participate in the social bowls day with the ACT bowlers on Wednesday February 14th. There are likely to be forty bowlers from Canberra, so we are looking to match them so we can integrate bowlers from both groups. Given the numbers we’ll probably be utilising the Lewis Green as well as the Waratah.

Social Bowls

The hot and humid day did not deter sixteen bowlers from getting out onto the green for social bowls. The Match Committee organised two games of triples and one of pairs.

In the pairs match, Arnie Lenczuk and a well suntanned Steven Goddard took on Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the sprightly Mick ‘potter’ Flynn, eager to continue his fine form from Wednesday. Although they conceded three shots on the first end, Arnie and Steven won the next seven ends on the trot to race to a 14 – 4 lead. And then a whopping six shots on the tenth end had Steven and Arnie leading 20 – 4, and their opponents reeling! However, to the credit of Mick and Peter they put their heads down and attempted to reel the leaders in. They won seven of the second half ends, but, unfortunately for them, found the deficit to great to overcome. The final score in favour of team Goddard was a very impressive 29 – 16.

Arnie watches a ‘rosie’ bowl rest against the jack!

In a triples game on rink 9, Graham Hartnup, Don Chapman and the irrepressible evergreen Gordon Lewis had a great tussle against Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt, Ian ‘one knee’ Crow and skipper no longer Bundy Stephen Day. Stephen’s team won four of the first five ends to have a handy lead of 8 – 4. Both sides then won alternate ends up to the tenth, with Gordon’s team scoring slightly the better and closing the gap to one shot. Of the next seven ends, Stephen’s team won five and extended their lead to 17 – 13. However, as all the Bowral bowlers know, never write off a Gordon Lewis led team; they rose to the occasion and with Don and Gordon hounding the heads, their team frustrated the opposition, won all the remaining ends and took the game 20 – 17.

Indefatigable, irrepressible Gordon got his team home again!

In the final triples match, Harold Wall, the wily Scot Owen Williams and skipper Craig Norman battled for honours against Grahame ‘grandad’ Denman, Terry Norwood and the chinsock himself Bob Crowley. Bob’s team opened with two shots and were holding one shot on the second when skipper Craig played an excellent weighted shot to create wayhem! Shot bowl gone and 8 shots (yes indeed, 8 huge shots!!) to Craig’s team remaining! However, skipper Bob remained calm, encouraged his team and they began to edge their way back into the game. With Grahame bowling well, and Bob converting, they had levelled the scores by the fourteenth end, and a couple of ends later they led 17 – 15. Could the miracle comeback happen . . . well, no! The wily Owen fired in some excellent bowls in the concluding ends for Craig’s team to run out 22 – 17 victors.

Owen finished with a flurry of fine shots to shut out the opposition!
