Social Bowls Saturday January 6th

On this beautiful sunny afternoon, twenty-four bowlers decided to turn out for social bowls. This was a rise in number and very pleasing to the Match Committee; let’s hope the numbers continue to increase. Given the convenient round number of twenty-four bowlers, four games of triples were organised.

On rink 9, Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards, Ian ‘one-leg’ Crow and Tony ‘flick’ Oakes took on Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight, Peter Charnley and skipper Dave Coltman. Although Tony’s team conceded a shot on the first end, they had themselves up 5 – 1 after four. Dave’s team won three of the next four ends, but found themselves still well behind at 5 – 13 on the eleventh end. Dave then got his team moving and by the sixteenth end were only a shot  adrift at 13 – 14. Game on was the call! However team Oakes regained form and scorched home to win 24 – 15.

Skipper Tony got his team home in a high scoring game!

On the next rink, Andy Connor, Terry Butt and George Hindi battled against Don Chapman, Terry Norwood and skipper Bob ‘chinsock’ Crowley. George’s team got the better of the early ends to lead 6 – 1 after four ends. With George in especially fine form, they extended the lead to 9 – 3 after eight and had the opposition under pressure. And the opposition responded; with Don on the jack and with Bob hitting top form, team Crowley edged their way back into the game to be 12 all after fifteen ends. And then, level again at 15 all with two ends to play it was either side’s game to win. Bob then secured two shots on the next end and his team held on to win 17 – 16 in a cracker of a game.

After a slow start,  ‘chinsock’ Bob sent down some excellent bowls that turned the game!

On rink 11, Peter Cornwell, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and skipper Steven ‘smooth’ Goddard played Ian ‘cool’ Duncan, gentleman Jim Starkey and the maestro himself Robin Staples. With the score at 3 all after two ends, Steven’s team then edged to the lead only to find themselves at 6 – 6 after six ends. Two ends later it was 7 all, another two ends saw it 8 all and after fourteen ends it was 11 all! Wow, what a tight game! And then the shackles were broken as Robin’s team surged to the lead scoring nine shots on the next three ends. Each side then won a couple of ends to close out the game, and Robin’s team came away with the victory at 23 – 13. What an interesting match that was so close for two thirds of the game and then saw an explosion of shots to one side!

Ian had the better of the battle of the leads!

In the final match, Grahame Denman, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and the indomitable Gordon Lewis battled for honours against Graham Hartnup, Arny Lenczuk and skipper, the wily Bob Edwards. And, with an eye-watering five shots on the second end Bob’s team led 6 – 0 . . . what a start! However, with the determined Gordon at the helm, team Lewis won eight of the next nine ends to have the scores locked at 9 all. The scores were again level at 10 all on the thirteenth and again at 13 all on the eighteenth end. At that point, the game was on a knife’s edge for either side to take; and it was Bob’s team that got the upper hand. They won all of the last three ends to take out the victory at 18 – 13. And we offer congratulations to this group of bowlers who won the jackpot draw after the game! Well done fellows!

The wily Bob got his team home after a tight battle!
