BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY JANUARY 18th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some hors d’oeuvres to spike the palette prior to . . . pennants trials info:
- The Men’s Bowling Committee held its most recent meeting on Wednesday at 10.30am and a copy of the draft minutes is now posted on the notice board. Happy reading! Two sub-committees, sponsorship and greens, will be active in the next couple of weeks attempting to take things forward. Another decision that was taken was to accept the offer of Life Member Gordon Lewis to sponsor Singles, Pairs and Triples competitions later in the year exclusively for Wednesday bowlers. Stay tuned Wednesday bowlers. And again for general information, the Committee members are Terry Norwood (President), Peter Flight (Vice-President), Robin Staples (Treasurer), Chris Forrester, Ted McPhee, Graham Hunt, Ian Duncan, Richard Denman and Gordon Lewis ex officio.
- The first of the Pennants trials was held on Saturday and a short report appears below. There will be no official trial next Saturday the 25th, although matches will be organised amongst pennants aspirants should they be available for social bowls. The next official trial will be the following Saturday, February 1st, rolling off at 12.30.
- The first Pennants game for BBC will be against Bargo on February 8th at Bowral. The season actually opens the week prior, but our game against Bundanoon has been postponed to March 29th (or some other date to be arranged).
- Bowlers are reminded again that the Wilson Green is out of commission under a minor makeover. Barefoot bowls will share the Lewis Green with croquet while all social and competition bowls will be played on the Waratah Green.
- And another appeal to bowlers to help the Match Committee by not using the blue rink number markers for rubbish and cigarette butts! Please put any rubbish directly into the garbage bin and save the committee members from having to do a garbage run every bowls day.
Pennants Trial Matches
Defying some fairly threatening weather, the pennants trial matches got underway on Saturday. The morning rain had stopped around midday, and the selection panel/match committee decided to at least get some practice happening. As it turned out, the weather gods were kind and the afternoon slowly improved to reasonably pleasant by four o’clock. The breeze/wind wasn’t very helpful though, frequently changing direction and gusting strongly when not expected. The pennants selectors, Robin Staples (chair), Graham Hunt, Gail Fraser and Peter Flight organised three games of fours, giving twenty-four aspirants a good hit out under their watchful eyes. The results of the matches were fairly irrelevant, as the selectors were looking at individual performances, so what follows is merely to let you know some detail that normally gets reported.
On rink 8, Sylvia Handley, Peter Flight, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee battled against Noel Fraser, Reta South, Gail Fraser and Ash Lewis. In an astonishing opening twelve ends, Al’s team won eleven of those ends to lead 20 – 3. It was a long way back from there, but Ash’s team managed to have the better of the back half and reduce the deficit. 26 – 16 was, however, an impressive victory for Sylvia, Peter, Dave and Al.
On rink 9, Alice Moore, Lynne Boshier, Gordon Lewis and Stephen Day faced off against Ted McPhee, Jill Harwood, Terry Norwood and Chris Forrester. Team Day dominated proceedings from the outset as their opposition just couldn’t really break into the match at all. Gordon, as usual and Stephen gave their opposite numbers a bowling lesson on the way to a convincing 21 – 10 victory.
In the final game, Mandy Challender, Ian Duncan, Arnie Lenczuk and Mick Flynn tussled for honours against Barb Wainberg, Mark Barrow, Richard Denman and Clive Neutze. As with the other games, this turned out to be a one-sided game with Mick’s team on top throughout. They won fifteen of the twenty-one ends with a victory margin of 31 – 6.
