A couple of reminders:

  1. The Bowls Secretary is still calling for bowlers to enter the Chris Benton Memorial event on Saturday February 4th commencing at 12.30. Again, reminding you that you can list your name individually or as part of a fours team. The schedule is on the notice board which, due to the Club renovations, has been shifted temporarily to the dining area. If you can’t locate it, one of the bar staff will be able to direct you. Come on gents, get your name down to be part of this event which supports brain cancer research.
  2. On Wednesday February 14th, social bowls will be combined with the visitors from Canberra. Again, the schedules are posted on the notice boards, both men’s and women’s, ready for you to enter your name.

Social Bowls

Seventeen eager bowlers turned out for bowls on a very sultry, warm Saturday afternoon. The breeze shifting constantly between north-west and south was a bit of a nuisance, but certainly couldn’t be blamed for the four bowls which swelled the coffers of the ‘wishing well’! With seventeen bowlers, the Match Committee organised three games of triples, with one game having a swing lead bowler.

On rink 8, Rick Reynolds, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the dasher himself Clive Neutze did battle against Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and ‘Mr Potters’ Mick Flynn. Although they dropped a shot on the first end, Mick’s boys were soon into stride and led 6 – 1 after four. After six ends the lead had been reduced to a single shot, but when they clocked up consecutively a five shot haul and a six, they had swept to a commanding lead of 18 – 6. Unfortunately for Clive’s team, the second half of the match was much the same, with team Flynn very much in control. Try as they might, team Neutze could only score singles, and the final score in favour of Mick’s team was an impressive 30 – 10.

Nonagenarian Keith still rolls them near the jack!

In the match on rink 10, Harold ‘stentless’ Wall, wily Owen Williams and skipper Steven ‘smooth’ Goddard took on Paul McInerney, Ian ‘cros’ Crow and that wily leftie Bob Edwards. Both sides won an early end, but an impressive four shot haul by team Edwards on the fourth end had them ahead 6 – 1. The lead was short-lived however, as Steven’s team won six of the next seven ends, including two fours and an eye-watering five, and roared to a lead of 18 – 7! Where was the oxygen?! Bob’s team did hit back to a degree in the second half and got to within seven shots by the seventeenth end. Their run fizzled however, and team Goddard ran over them to record a twenty shot victory of 34 – 14.

The wily Owen is in good form!

The match on the rink between the other games saw Grahame ‘grandad’ Denman as swing lead bowler for Terry ‘PNE’ Norwood and the relentless Chris Forrester on the one hand and Arnie ‘man in black’ Lenczuk and the indefatigable evergreen Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis on the other. With Chris in tiptop form, his team led 7 – 1 after five ends and they were full of smiles. However, a Gordon led team doesn’t fold easily and, with both Gordon and Arnie on fire, they won seven of the next eight ends, wiped the smiles from faces and led 11 – 9! Two ends later Chris’ team had clawed their way to 11 all and then the ‘hurricane’ hit – two successive four shot ends to Chris’ team had them eight in front with fours ends to play. Gordon then got his team back to within four shots, but when Chris followed the jack into the ditch on the final end, it was game over. 21 – 15 was the final score, but the game was closer than that.

Chris had a great game and a great battle with Gordon!
