Mixed Pairs Championship
Despite the weather being most unkind, two twenty-one end games of the first round were completed on Saturday. When play started at 12.30, the temperature was very low and a nasty freezing breeze gusted from the north-west. It was most uncomfortable, although later in the afternoon the conditions were a little milder and the sun even made a brief appearance!
In the match on rink 8, Tisi Lear and Mark Barrow took on Ricci Wilson and Arnold Lenczuk and despite dropping a shot on the first end, it was Tisi and Mark who found the jack early to lead 7 – 1 after five. And then, as so often happens, the game turned for Ricci and Arnie to win the next four ends to jump to a lead of 11 – 7! The game then developed into a dog fight with the sides winning alternate ends, but it was Arnie and Ricci who still clung to the lead. With four ends to play, they led 17 – 15, but with one end left the lead had switched and was 19 – 17 to Tisi and Mark. In a ripper of a last end, Ricci and Arnie could grab only one shot, so victory went to Tisi and Mark at 19 – 18. All bowlers had their flashes of form, but the standout was Tisi who consistently led well.

Winning skipper Mark Barrow!
In the other game on rink 9, the Salters, Terry and Anne battled against Mandy Challender and Terry Norwood and it was the Salters who won the opening to lead 4 – 0 after two ends. It was then that Mandy and Terry found their touch and they won the next six ends to surge to a 14 – 4 lead. Anne and Terry moved the score to 8 – 14, but by the thirteen the end, Mandy and Terry had taken a commanding lead of 19 – 8. However, the Salters were far from done and, with Anne really firing well, they won four of the next five ends to reduce the deficit to five shots. Mandy and Terry then steadied to have a couple of very good ends and ran out nine shot winners at 25 – 16. The Salters clearly had the better of the short ends, while their opponents took the honours on the longer runs.
