BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY MAY 10th

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY MAY 10th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some nibbles for a start:

  1. The BBC Chris Benton Memorial charity day was held on Saturday May 10th and the report appears below.
  2. The funeral service for late member Jim Starkey will be held at 11am on Tuesday May 13th at Beavan’s. Any bowler attending might like to consider wearing some aspect of bowling gear to indicate the Club’s support for Jim and the Starkey family.
  3. Unfortunately, the funeral service for Jim clashes with the Can Assist charity bowls day being conducted by the Women’s Bowling Committee. Apologies are extended to Lynne and her organising committee for any inconvenience this clash causes them.
  4. Bowlers who entered the Club Triples Championship event are advised that the draw has now been made and is posted on the notice board. First round matches will take place at 12.30 on Saturday May 17th with the second round matches the following Saturday. There should be some very good bowls on view for those who would like to sit in the sun and draw on a toddy or two.
  5. Feedback about the new newsletter Jack Chat continues to be favourable, so we’ll keep that going. Don’t be surprised if Ian Duncan taps you on the shoulder and says that you are to be the bowler featured in the next edition! Better you give him the info rather than let him make it up!

Chris Benton Memorial Charity Event

Chris Benton was a very enthusiastic, active member of the Club who poured much energy into advancing bowls in Bowral. Unfortunately for Chris and his family, he was diagnosed with brain cancer which, as in the vast majority of cases, claimed his life. Mrs Roz Benton and family have, for a number of years now, sponsored an event to respect the memory of Chris, and to raise money to support research into brain cancer treatment. As is the custom, the day involved gathering to remind bowlers of the purpose of the event, the playing of the beloved game of bowls and concluding with drinks, food, speeches and presentations.

The action part of the day commenced with the usual ‘spider’ with all participating bowlers and the Benton family positioned around the green and attempting to roll a bowl closest to the jack in the centre. By some connivance or just old fashioned charmed luck, Mike ‘fish’ Hook managed to end up six inches from the target and was therefore declared the recipient of the prized bottle of scotch. Well done Mike, and expect regular visits from the scotch tippling brigade.

For the major event of the day, the fours competition, thirty-two bowlers had listed their names, some already in teams and others just randomly listed. In the end, the eight teams of fours were as follows:

  1. Joel Hunt, Graham Hunt, Richard Denman and Chris Forrester
  2. Gordon Lewis, Stephen Della, Greg Lewis and Ash Lewis
  3. Mike Hook, Graham Hartnup, Arnold Lenczuk and Dave Charlesworth
  4. Grahame Denman, Charles Coode, Terry Norwood and Robin Staples
  5. Andy Connor, Peter Flight, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee
  6. Peter Marshall, Peter Martin, Peter Watson and Kevin Stafford
  7. Bruce Yahl, Mark Rundle, Viv Gear, and Clive Neutze
  8. Mark Barrow, Owen Williams, Joe O’Donnell and Mick Flynn

With a random draw, each team played three games of seven ends with the winning team to be determined by the number of victories and, if necessary, the number of shots scored. After much fine bowling, two teams emerged unscathed with three victories and the chance of being crowned champs. After the shots were tallied, it was team five of Andy Connor, Peter Flight, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee who took out the honours. The runners-up were Joel Hunt, Graham Hunt, Richard Denman and Chris Forrester.

In the Club after food and an excellent speech by Chris Benton’s daughter Kendall, the presentation of prizes to each of the winning four was made by Roz Benton. The Men’s Bowling Committee warmly congratulates and thanks Roz for sponsoring this very important event of the bowling calendar, and looks forward to next February when we’ll do it all again.
