BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY MAY 18th       (Terry Norwood at the desk)

A couple of points:

  1. The collated information from the members playing experience on the Wilson Green has now been handed on to management. Also mentioned to management is that the Waratah Green has discoloured patches which appear to be due to mould and that a spray would be beneficial.
  2. A reminder that the Senior Singles Competition gets under way on June 1st and that nominations close on Saturday May 25th at 5pm. Seniors are those bowlers who are 60 or older on June 30th 2024.
  3. Also reminding bowlers that the Senior Pairs Competition will be staged in June as well, so it’s time to get organised and list your names on the schedule which is posted on the notice board.

Social Bowls Saturday May 18th

Despite the weather, sixteen hardy souls turned out for social bowls on Saturday. The weather was frightful with a minus 10 breeze blowing out of somewhere/anywhere and the thermometer showing 9 degrees. With the ‘feels like’ temperature below zero, the bowlers did well to stay on the green as long as they did. The Match Committee organised two games of triples and one of pairs.

In a triples game on rink 8, Grahame Denman, Jill Harwood and Robin ‘maestro’ Staples faced off against Barry Werfel, Arny ‘blackfeet’ Lenczuk and the wily Scot Owen Williams. Both sides won early ends so that the score was 3 all after five ends. Owen’s team then pushed out to a handy lead only to have team Staples peg them back to within a shot by the twelfth end. Each side then won three of the last six ends but the heavier scoring to Owen’s team meant that they finished three in front when time was called. In the demanding conditions Jill seemed to have a very handy game.

In a pairs game on rink 9, Gwen and Rob Scott our visitors from Melbourne took on the cobbler himself Gordon Lewis and one of his offspring Greg. The Scotts got the better of the conditions and their opposition at the start to lead 9 – 3 after five ends. However, a scorching five shotter on the next end had the Lewis team well and truly back in the match. The Scotts then edged to a lead again but by the eleventh end Gordon and Greg had tied scores up at 12 apiece. And then, in the back half of the game each side won five ends but a four shotter along the way meant the Lewis team got home at 22 – 17.

In the triples game on rink 10, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Chris ‘unflappable’ Forrester and the wily Bob Edwards battled against Ian ‘cool’ Duncan, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and skipper Steve Day. Steve’s team mastered the conditions better than the opposition at the start to lead 8 – 2 after six ends. Bob’s team then won a couple of ends but trailed 17 – 7 after the twelfth. Bob’s team then hit their straps and after a whopping, eye-watering seven (yes a seven folks) they hit the lead on the fifteenth end! However Steve immediately settled his team and they went on to grind out an eight shot victory at 26 – 18.
