BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY MAY 3rd (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and pieces for a start:
- In Pennants news, and this is the last for the season (!), Picton who won our section of the Grade Six Competition, went on last Saturday to win the overall playoffs against the other section winners. Congratulations to the Picton Razorbacks!
- The first edition of the new newsletter ‘Jack Chat’ has been emailed out today to all members. Check your inboxes!
- Another reminder that the annual Chris Benton Charity event will be held on Saturday May 10th. Hopefully we can raise a decent amount of money to send off to Brain Cancer research.
- As of the new week, Shane Holland (not Shane Harvey . . . how did he get mixed up in this!?!) will be the manager of the BB Club. The Men’s Bowling Committee wishes him well and looks forward to working closely with him in the promotion and development of lawn bowls in Bowral.
- Ninety-four years young Keith Edwards is still undergoing rehab in hospital and slowly making progress. He’s a tough rooster and we hope to have him back on the green at some stage in the future.
- The draw for the first round of the Club Championship Triples will be conducted on Wednesday May 7th. The draw will be posted on the notice board around noon so teams will be able to see who they take on when play gets underway on the 17th.
Saturday Social Bowls
Twenty-four bowlers turned out for a roll on what was a very pleasant day of sunshine and low breeze. Given the number, the Match Committee organised four games of triples.
On rink 8, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt, Terry ‘Preston’ Norwood and the maestro Robin Staples battled for honours against Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan, Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk and the ebullient one Chris Forrester. Robin’s team started with great flourish grabbing seven shots on the first two ends, but were soon brought crashing back to reality when Chris’ trio grabbed a thundering sixer on the third and followed up with a three! With skipper Chris in scintillating form, they charged out to a 15 – 8 lead on eight and had the opposition gasping. Gasping they might have been but when they notched up a hefty five of their own on the tenth, they were within one shot and it was game on! Undaunted and still in magical form, Chris then got his team ahead 21 – 16, but by the twentieth, the lead had been reduced to one. In a gripping last end, Chris came from one down to snatch victory with a double and wiped the smiles off the faces of the opposition. Goodness gracious Chris bowled well!!!
Running shots, draws, wicks . . . Chris didn’t miss once!!
On the next rink, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Mick ‘relieved potters’ Flynn took on Rowena Coode, the admiral Peter Watson and the livewire nonagenarian Gordon Lewis. And what a first end was had with Gordon and his dazzling new XGs . . . a sizzling five shotter on the first end! It must have been the sparkle and flash of the new bowls that had stunned team Flynn! Stunned or not, Mick rallied his trio and by the sixth end it was game on at 6 all. In a tight one with shots hard to find, by the thirteenth end team Flynn led by one at 12 – 11, and then by three after sixteen ends. However, far from done, Gordon rallied his group and by the eighteenth end had wrestled back the lead at 16 – 15. Two ends later and with one to play, they still led by a shot and crossed their fingers and toes. In a ripper of a finish, Mick’s team rose to the occasion to grab two shots and victory. A great game!
Like a good wine, Jill improves week upon week!!
On rink 10, Mark ‘tinny’ Barrow, Mike ‘grappling’ Hook, and skipper Stephen ‘makeover’ Day faced off against Charles Coode, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards. In a storming opening to the match, Steve and his men grabbed four shots on the first end, and by the fifth had notched up a score-line of 14 – 2! Perhaps it was something in the water, but Bob’s trio couldn’t find first gear and were wallowing in no man’s land! They did score a three on the sixth, but by the tenth were adrift by 24 – 5! To their great relief, the pendulum swung, and swung hard! In an astonishing turnaround, team Edwards started to win end after end . . . after end . . . beginning on the eleventh and going on and on! In fact, they won ten of the last eleven ends! Wow! But, to their frustration, they were restricted to singles on six of those ends and Steve and his men were able to hold on for a 26 – 21 victory.
In the final match on rink 11, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Richard ‘ten pin’ Denman and the wily Owen Williams tussled against Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth, and although they dropped singles on the first two ends, Owen, Grahame and Richard grabbed a smashing five on the third. Dave’s team squared the game on the fifth end, but by the eighth, team Williams had skipped away to lead 12 – 5. Dave’s team responded immediately and with a good run of ends hit the lead at 16 – 15 on the thirteenth. In a rip-roaring match with plenty of chat and shouts of glee, Owen rallied his men and they took over the scoring. In fact, in that run home, they won seven of the eight ends to get home 24 – 17. What a ripper of a game, thoroughly enjoyed by all!
The wily Owen got his team home in a ripper of a game!
