BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15th

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to chew on for a start:

  1. The second round of the Minor Singles competition was completed on Saturday despite a storm threatening to derail things. More on that (the competition not the storm!) below.
  2. URGENT NOTICE – nominations for the Club Major Fours Championship close soon and we are very short of entries. Come on bowlers, get talking and get yourselves organised so that we can make this a competition to remember.
  3. And another reminder to any bowlers rolling up on the Wilson Green that play is to be east – west. We are trying to give the south and north edges some recovery time free of traffic.
  4. For anyone interested in buying a Lions Christmas cake this year, Graham Hartnup (0412604301) is the man to contact. You can enquire at the bar of the Club or contact Graham directly. At $22 they are terrific value.
  5. The Southern Highlands Cup between Bowral, Bundanoon and Robertson will commence on November 30th with the first round  being staged at Bowral. The teams are now posted on the notice board at the Club. Bowl well, and bring home the silverware!

Minor Singles Competition

On rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Dave Charlesworth battled against Paul McInerney and despite dropping a single on the first end, Paul led 5 – 1 after four. However, finding his length and having those red devils on target, Dave had levelled the scores by the eighth. The game then settled into a fairly close affair until Paul notched up double followed by a triple and jumped to an 8 shot advantage. Dave hung in as best he could but it was Paul who didn’t waver and he ground out a solid 25 – 17 victory.

On the next rink it was Denis Lees who took on Peter Flight and both won early ends for the score to be tied up at 4 all after six ends. Drawing very well, Denis then won six of the next eight ends to move out to a eight shot lead at 15 – 7. Ambidextrous Peter then got both hands working, literally, turned the game and locked the game at 16 all, and then six ends later hit the front 21 – 18. In a thrilling end to a super game, Denis came back with brilliant drawing under much pressure, and got home 25 – 22.

On rink 10, Ted McPhee tussled for honours against Barb Wainberg and it was Ted who blitzed the opening to lead 8 – 1 after seven ends. With a double followed by a triple, Barb then looked as though she was about to really make a move, but Ted had other ideas and went on a cracking run to have Barb under real pressure. In fact, Ted was in terrific form not giving Barb much room at all near the jack and making sure he had something behind as well. Ted had the shot to answer anything Barb could throw at him, and he progressed in the comp with a resounding 25 – 8 win.

On the neighbouring rink, Graham Hartnup took on Terry Norwood, and it was Terry who was on the jack early to lead 11 – 3 after seven ends. Graham then found better length to win the next three ends and give his confidence a lift. However, he was soon under the pump again as Terry ground out end after end. In fact, Graham could only pick up one more shot as the ends kept slipping away. The final score was 25 – 8.

With NZ-bound Graham Hunt as marker on rink 12, Tisi Lear entered the fray against Charles Coode and it was Tisi who swamped Charles at the start to lead 11 – 1 after seven ends. Shortly after, the score had moved to 15 – 3 and Tisi looked to be completely in control. However, in a stunning turnaround, Charles won eight ends on the trot to hit the lead and after twenty-one ends had pushed out to 20 – 16. Much to her relief, Tisi then finally outdrew Charles to grab a three, and when she grabbed another three, the scores were locked at 22 all. In a very tight finish, Charles won three of four ends and so completed a remarkable comeback at 25 – 23.

In the final game, Peter Marshall tried to stare down Chris Forrester, but Chris was more than up for the challenge, opening with a full house four shotter, and leading 10 – 1 after the first four ends. The highly favoured Chris was in terrific form and three ends later the score had moved out to 14 – 2. To his great credit, Peter then won four of five ends to put a few shots on the card, but Chris was always in control and he monstered the last five ends to come out on top by 28 – 7.

So, the quarter final matches will see the following clashes

Graham Hunt  Vs  Paul McInerney

Chris Forrester  Vs  Mike Hook

Ted McPhee  Vs  Charles Coode

Denis Lees  Vs  Terry Norwood

Saturday Social Bowls

With most bowlers tied up with the Minor Singles games, there were only two social matches and these were played on the Wilson Green.

On rink 1, Dave Coltman and Gordon Lewis took on Barry Werfel and Robin Staples and, in a lopsided match, Barry and Robin overwhelmed their opponents to the tune of 32 – 10.  Perhaps it was being on the grass, but Dave and Gordon just couldn’t get cracking at all as Barry and Robin notched up the ends. Ah well, there’s always next week cobbler!

In the other match where Grahame Denman and Bob Edwards tackled Peter Martin and Mick Flynn, the result was much closer. Bob and Grahame led through the first half of the game, but Peter and Mick then pegged them back to get home 18 – 14.
