Some information to start with:

  1. The AGM of the Bowral Bowling Club Ltd will be held at 10.30am on Sunday 15th October. All members are encouraged to attend.
  2. Bowls Secretary, Kev Stafford, is currently organising with the Robertson and Bundanoon clubs the Crowe-Brenning Day and Southern Highlands Cup events. Details of that will be available soon.
  3. The Bowls Committees are calling for nominations for the mixed pairs competition which will commence on the morning of October 22nd. 4. The Men’s Bowls Committee will be running a BBQ at 4pm after bowls on Wednesday 18th October. Bowlers who wish to attend can list their names on the sheet posted on the notice board.
  5. And another reminder that coach Robin Staples is making himself available at 2.30 on the next four Tuesday afternoons to offer any assistance he can to any bowler who wants to have him look over what you are doing … or not doing! No appointment necessary, just roll up … and roll up!

Social Bowls Saturday 7th

Eighteen eager souls turned out for social bowls on a Saturday which which held no fears weather-wise. The slight breeze had a chilly edge to it, but, otherwise it was pleasantly warm and could provide no excuses for errant bowls. With the number of bowlers at eighteen, the match committee organised three games of triples.

On rink 8, Peter ‘ricochet’ Cornwell and the redoubtable pair Al McGhee and Dave Coltman took on Ian Duncan, Tony ‘sparkles’ Oakes and the legendary cobbler Gordon Lewis. The Coltman led team got off to a scorching start winning seven of the first eight ends and setting up a 14 – 1 lead! It looked like the ‘cobbler’ was in need of a defibrillator to fire some spark into his team when things got worse as team Coltman led 21 – 4 after thirteen. Defibrillator or not, something sparked action into the Lewis led lot and they mounted a comeback. However, although they outscored their opponents in the back half of the game snatching a couple of threes and a couple of twos, they found the deficit too great to make up. Dave’s team got home by 24 – 15.

On the adjacent rink, Grahame ‘Smurf’ Denman, Terry Norwood and the Robin ‘maestro’ Staples battled for bragging rights against Brian ‘misère’ Bailey, Graham ‘warmish’ Hunt and Bob ‘WO’ Edwards. The Bob led team opened proceedings with a shot on the first end and looked to have settled nicely into the match. However, the initiative was immediately snatched from them and they found themselves quickly behind the eight-ball. Robin’s team won ends two to eleven and had team Edwards looking for the same defibrillator Gordon was after! With Robin bowling brilliantly on the backhand, team Staples had roared to a 19 -1 lead. Almost everything they tried worked while for Bob’s team it was the opposite. Team Edwards fared a little better in the run home, but the final result was a crushing 27 – 6 win for Robin’s team!

The final triples match saw Arnold ‘black feet’ Lenczuk, Peter ‘Qantas’ Flight and skipper Steven ‘unruffled’ Goddard up against ‘gentleman’ Jim Starkey, Ian ‘cros’ Crow and skipper Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. And with Mick in top form, his team got off to a very good start and led 5 – 0 after four ends. Team Goddard worked its way onto the scorecard on the next couple of ends, but with Mick calling the shots, team Flynn held a 9 – 5 lead after eleven ends. If you could believe Arny his Rosie bowls were working well, but the score suggested that Jim’s new bluies were doing fine as well. And, when Mick’s team grabbed four shots on the thirteenth end they were in prime position at 13 – 7. Then the comeback began; end after end of single shots to Steven’s team saw them edge to within a shot with one end to play. And on that final end, team Goddard grabbed three shots and so, after trailing for twenty ends, snatched victory at 16 – 14! Wow, makes you want to grab a Tooheys or Two and listen to the fat lady sing!! Oh, and Ian, as promised, I will not tell what that naughty bowl did when you thought it would do something else!!
