BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Starting with a few items of information:
- At the AGM of the BBC Ltd conducted on Sunday morning September 15th at 11am, it was indicated that the Board will engage a consultant to advise the greenkeeper and the Club Manager on the best course of action to bring the Wilson Green up to Pennant playing standard. You will be informed of anything that comes to light. In the meantime, the Greens Committee representing the Men’s and Women’s bowling committees will liaise with the greenkeeper to attempt to ensure that the Waratah Green is well prepared for each bowling day.
- The entry sheet for the Bowral Rookie Singles is on the notice board awaiting nominations. Rookies are those bowlers who started bowling after January 1st 2021. The competition will be run mid-week rather than on a weekend. Entries close at 5pm on Tuesday October 1st.
- The entry sheet for the BBC Mixed Pairs is also posted on the notice board, and bowlers have until 5pm on October 5th to nominate.
Saturday Social Bowls
Twelve super-keen bowlers turned out for a trundle on this middle Saturday of the month. Weather-wise, the day was very pleasant, although a fluky breeze switching between north-west and south-west made things tricky some of the time. Given the number of bowlers, two games of triples were organised.
On rink 8, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Chris ‘unflappable’ Forrester and the commodore Peter Watson battled against Keith ‘fox’ Edwards, Terry Norwood and the maestro Robin Staples. And what a high quality game this turned out to be! On the vast majority of ends, bowls were clustered around the jack and shots were hard to come by. In this very tight game, the leads had a close tussle, as did the seconds and the skips. Peter’s team led 6 – 4 after five ends, Robin’s team 13 – 12 after ten, and so the battle continued. There were never more than five shots separating the teams and with two ends to play there was only one. Game on! In the end, Robin’s team held on and won by three at 23 – 20. What a ripper of a game!
In the other triples game, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup, Dave Charlesworth and Stephen ‘moustache less’ Day took on the trio of Richard ‘no denman’ Denman, Arnold ‘rosie’ Lenczuk and the ‘dasher’ Clive Neutze. Both sides took early ends so that there was only one shot difference at 6 – 5 in favour of Steve’s team after six ends. However, a five shotter to Steve’s team on the eighth end saw them surge to a solid lead which they then built on. By the fourteenth end, their lead was 18 – 9 and they looked in control. And it seems they were . . . whatever Clive’s team came up with over the homeward stretch Steve’s team was able to match. The final score was 25 – 16 in a match where one side won eleven ends and the other ten. Even on the ends, apart on the scoring!
