BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 30th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
A few bits of information to begin with:
- The Mixed Pairs Championship will be conducted in October so the call is out for nominations. The schedule is posted on the Men’s Notice Board and entries can be listed there. As of 5pm Saturday there were eight pairs nominated but we’d like to see many more than that. Come on guys and gals, let’s see if we can round up a big field and give the defending champs, Gail and Jim, a run for their money.
- Coach Robin Staples is making himself available on the next five Tuesdays at 2.30pm to offer assistance to any bowler who would like him to cast his eye over what you are doing … or not doing! No appointment is necessary so you can roll up as a beginner or if you need the ‘yips’ sorted.
- Bowls Secretary Kevin Stafford is currently organising with the Robertson and Bundanoon Clubs the Crowe-Brenning Day and the Southern Highlands Cup. October is likely as the timing so keep your eyes peeled for more information.
- The Men’s Bowl’s Committee is organising a BBQ on Wednesday October 18th at 4pm. This is open to all bowlers and will be funded by the Bowls Committee. It would be great to have a big turnout on that day.
Social Bowls
Sixteen bowlers turned out for social bowls on the 30th. This was a slightly higher number than on the previous few weeks but still not a big field. If anyone has an idea of how the numbers can be increased of a Saturday, the Men’s Bowls Committee would be pleased to hear of it. Given the numbers, two games of triples were organised and one of pairs.
The pairs match saw Arnold Lenczuk and skipper Dave Coltman up against the evergreen Gordon Lewis and former Sydney bowler Craig Norman. In a game of very high standard the Lewis/Norman combination came away with a solid victory 27 – 17. Craig was in very hot form and kept transforming the game to his advantage.
On rink 9, Peter ‘ricochet’ Cornwell, Graham ‘luke warm’ Hunt and skipper Ian ‘Cros’ Crow took on Graham ‘banana’ Hartnup, Terry Norwood and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. This game did not turn out to be a comfortable time for team Flynn! They conceded a five shot haul on the second end, four on the ninth and 8, yes eight on the last. All team Crow bowlers had their moments, but none more than skipper Ian who had a blinder! Well bowled ‘Crossy’. The final score was 33 – 18! Ouch!
The other triples match saw Graham Denman, Barry Werfel and Richard Denman battle it out against Alex Lamb, Harold Wall and skipper Tony ‘sparkles’ Oakes. Richard’s team had the better of the early ends and led 10 – 2 after seven ends and 11 – 6 after ten. However, a three shot haul on the next end got Tony’s team moving and when they notched up a six (which completely took Richard’s breath away … six! It can’t be six!) they hit the lead. When time was called after eighteen ends, team Oakes had the bragging rights at 21 – 16.
