RSL Shield Competition Saturday August 31st
The final round of the RSL Shield was played on Saturday with the staging of the pairs matches. At the end of round two, the team of Mick Flynn, Peter Flight, Stephen Della and Ash Lewis were leaders on 80 points, followed by Graham Hunt, Terry Norwood, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee on 65, Bob Edwards, Dave Charlesworth, Stephen Day and Steven Goddard on 62, and Arnie Lenczuk, Ted McPhee, Gordon Lewis and Bob Crowley on 50. Saturday was pleasantly sunny, but the wind howling out of the west – north west made for a challenging day on the slick surface of the Waratah Green.
Rink 8 saw team Goddard represented by Dave Charlesworth and the suave Steven Goddard battle against Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and Ash ‘bunnies’ Lewis. Peter and Ash won the first three ends but then Dave and Steven really hit their straps and by the eighth end had accumulated 11 shots to the 5 for team Lewis. And when they notched up a huge five shotter on the eleventh followed by a pair of threes, they had 24 shots to the 7 for Peter and Ash. Over the remaining eight ends Dave and Steven improved their score by 6 shots only to be out-scored by Peter and Ash who notched up 12. So, it was 30 shots in total to team Goddard and 19 to team Lewis.
The other game involving these two teams was between Mick ‘potters’ Flynn and Stephen ‘doc’ Della for team Lewis and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards and Steve ‘makeover’ Day for team Goddard. In a scintillating start, Bob and Steve grabbed a five shotter on the first end and really had the blood pumping. However, Mick and Stephen won the next six ends to steer the Lewis ship into calmer waters for the steady game they were after. Bob and Steve, with plenty of chat, had the score level at 11 all on the eleventh end and were really getting pumped. But, unfortunately for them, their run fizzled as Mick and the Doc took most of the ends in the run home. In the end it was 21 shots to Flynn/Della for team Lewis and 16 to Edwards/Day for team Goddard.
So, putting the scores together for these two games, the total for team Lewis was 40 shots, and for team Goddard was 46.
Rink 9 saw team McGhee bowlers Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Dave Coltman take on Arnold ‘rosie’ Lenczuk and Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis for team Crowley. In a great start for them, Arnie and Gordon notched up 5 shots on the first three ends and were all smiles. Finding some better touch, Graham and Dave hit back and the scores were 8 to them and 7 to Arnie and Gordon after eight ends. With Arnie and Gordon then notching up 7 shots on the next three ends, the signs were very rosy for team Crowley. Far from done however, Dave and Graham put their heads down and ground out some fine ends in the back half of the match. They notched up another 12 shots coming home for a team McGhee total of 20 all up, to the final 19 that Arnie and Gordon reaped for team Crowley.
In the other game, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Bob ‘ebullience’ Crowley for team Crowley bumped bowls against the McGhee pairing of Terry Norwood and Al McGhee himself. The opening to this game was very tight so that each side had scored only five shots after five ends. Terry and Al then added 7 shots over the following four ends and were better satisfied. However, a tornado then hit the game in the form of a four end streak and a twelve shot gain to team Crowley! Up 17 to 9, Ted and Bob looked set to rip! But, their opponents had other ideas, got their heads down and came home slightly the better. At the twenty-first end the totals were 21 shots for team Crowley and 17 for team McGhee.
And so, putting the scores for these two matches together, the totals were 40 shots for team Crowley and 37 shots for team McGhee.
So, to the chart for the final scores in the RSL Shield Competition . . .
The RSL Shield victors Peter Flight, Stephen Della, skipper Ash Lewis and Mick Flynn! Congratulations!!
Social Bowls Wednesday August 28th
Twenty-two bowlers turned out for social bowls on a very windy Wednesday afternoon. The Match Committee organised three games of triples and one of pairs.
In the 18-ender pairs game, Keith ‘fox’ Edwards and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie battled against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman and John Fleming. In what turned out to be a one-sided affair, Keith and Paul came away with a huge victory with a score-line of 27 – 6.
On rink 8, Bill Meredith, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn head-butted with Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and the ebullient one Bob Crowley. In a rip-roaring game with some big scoring ends, Mick’s team triumphed to the tune of 27 to 18.
On rink 10, Jim Larkin, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt and Steve Day battled against Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Peter ‘virgin’ Flight and Steven ‘suave’ Goddard. In an otherwise fairly even game, it was the six shotter to team Day on the 14th end that was the difference as they went on to win 25 – 17.
In the game on rink 11, Alex Christlo, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Arnold ‘rosie’ Lenczuk faced off against Wal Markow, Graham Hartnup and Dave Charlesworth. With the scores 18 all, Arnie’s team cracked a massive six shotter on the last to bring home the bacon (or a lentil burger!!).
