BBC BROADCAST SUNDAY FEBRUARY 9th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Yesterday saw the second round of Pennants competition for the 24/25 season with the Bowral team playing host to the side from Bargo. At roll-off time, the sky was clear but the humidity was extremely high and this meant the bowlers suffered some discomfort for quite a while. Later in the afternoon, the temperature dropped as a storm approached so things were much more to bowlers liking. Fortunately, the matches were completed before the storm took full hold, although the last game made it into the Club with only minutes to spare. So, the results of the three matches were:
Team 1 Reta South, Peter Flight, Gordon Lewis, Ash Lewis 18 Vs Bargo 16
Bowral got away to an excellent start in this match to lead 12 – 1 after six ends and looked to be in control. However, some of the lustre went from their game and all Bargo four lifted to take the game right up to the home side. Hanging in well, Bowral still led comfortably at 17 – 9 with five ends to play . . . but then got the wobbles. With some excellent bowling, Bargo closed to within a shot with one end to roll. On the last, Bargo trailed the jack into the ditch and held two shots with shot bowl perched on the edge. With the shot of the game, skipper Ash removed the shot bowl and held position. A brilliant bowl to clinch the match!
Under enormous pressure, Ash delivered the shot of the match!
Team 2 Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Gail Fraser, Robin Staples 15 Vs Bargo 19
Bowral again made a fine start to lead 9 – 1 after six ends. At this stage, all four Bowral bowlers seemed to be confident and in quite good touch, and by the eleventh end still led well at 12 – 6. However, it was then that the Bargo bowlers started to play with enough weight to do some mischief in the heads and start taking shots. Bargo then ran together eight ends on the trot to take control of the game and lead 17 – 12. Desperately hanging in, Bowral grabbed a three on the twentieth to give themselves a chance on the last. Not to be however, as Bargo closed out the game with a double and took the competition point for this match.
The Fraser duo, Gail and Noel, battled hard on a difficult day!
Team 3 Chris Forrester, Terry Norwood, Dave Coltman, Al McGhee 33 Vs Bargo 10
In this game on rink 10, Bargo had the better of the opening to lead 4 – 2 after four ends. It was then that Chris as lead for Bowral really found tip top line and length to give Bowral a lot to play with and the team went from strength to strength. With skipper Al again in dazzling form and Dave pumping bowls into the head, the home side snatched a massive seven shotter on the tenth followed by a four on the eleventh! This took much of the steam from the Bargo four, and Bowral then dominated the back half. By the end of the game all four Bowral bowlers were on top of their opposite number and contributing well to the outcome.
The Coltman style; Dave is having a great season!
Much to the delight of the Bowral contingent, the home side won the day taking 9 competition points to the 1 point for Bargo. This places Bowral in second position on the grade six (section three) table one point behind the tigers from Taralga. Next Saturday February 15th, Bowral travels to Taralga to take on the leaders in what will certainly be a very tough encounter.
The teams for the encounter in Taralga are:
Team 1 Gordon Lewis, Peter Flight, Chris Forrester and Ash Lewis
Team 2 Bruce Yahl, Terry Norwood, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee
Team 3 Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Gail Fraser and Stephen Day
Selected bowlers and standby players are asked to indicate availability asap in the usual manner. If we travel together, we’ll need three cars and the committee will discuss financing the three cars at its meeting on Wednesday. To date, Peter Flight and Terry Norwood have offered to drive so we need one more car.
