BBC BROADCAST SUNDAY JANUARY 11th

BBC BROADCAST SUNDAY JANUARY 11th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs for a start:

  1. With Saturday bowls being cancelled due to the very hot weather, the Consistency Singles Competition will now be pushed back further into the month. Round 2 will now be played on Wednesday 14th except for the game which was played on Sunday. More on that game below.
  2. Bowlers please note that the Chris Benton event will now not be staged in February as previously mentioned. By agreement, the event will not now take place. Apologies for jumping the gun with the early announcement.
  3. Bowlers who’ve nominated for Pennants this year will be invited soon to participate in trial matches, so remain alert for information on this. Bowral has entered two teams this year, grade six and grade seven. Draws are yet to be made by Region, but Grade Six will almost certainly be pitted against the same teams as last year. A special meeting of the Men’s Committee executive will confirm the selectors for 2026 at a special meeting at 10.45 on Wednesday 14th.

Consistency Singles

One game of Round 2 of the Consistency Singles was played on Sunday 11th, with the remaining seven games to be completed on Wednesday.  The 15 degrees temperature was a complete change from the mid 30s of the previous day, and jackets were required against the chilly breeze! Ahh, the vagaries of the weather!!

Rolling out on rink 8, Arnie Lenczuk gave Denis Lees four points start and after three ends had closed to within two. However, so tight was the start to this match that it took another seven ends for Arnie to square the score at 48 points apiece. Two ends later it was 58 all, and with a 7 to 3 point count to Arnie on the next end, Denis surrendered the lead for the first time. However, he was back on terms at 73 all and then again at 93 all after nineteen ends. Arnie snatched the lead with 8 points on the next end, but Denis was stung into action and notched up 7, 8 and 7 (against Arnie’s 3, 2, 3) on the next three ends to lead 117 – 109. And the next end was a ripper . . . between them Denis and Arnie finished with six bowls within 18 inches of the jack and they shared the points 5 – 5, which seemed a fair outcome given the tightness of the bowls!! Unfortunately for Arnie, form deserted him from that point, and Denis skilfully notched up a couple of 7 pointers to take out the game 130 – 120. This was a high quality match with both bowlers consistently rising to the challenge thrown out by the other.

The Denis Lees style . . . round 2 victor over Arnie Lenczuk!
