BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 2nd

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 2nd         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

The nibbles before the second course:

  1. GREAT NEWS!! Bowral has state champions in the ranks! Bowral, represented by Stephen Della, Kevin Stafford and Mick Spong, won the NSW State Seniors Triples title on Wednesday morning. A day earlier at Alstonville on the north coast, the trio charged through the sectional round toppling one of the favoured teams in St Johns Park. On Wednesday morning at nearby Ballina, the Bowral boys entered the final in dreary, damp conditions. Trailing early, the trio responded well to the pressure and rose to the occasion rolling home at 22 – 17. Hearty congratulations Stephen, Kev and Mick; this is a momentous achievement!
  2. In less momentous (but still important!) news, the Nepean Highlanders pennants competitions will resume on Saturday April 12th. And for anyone catching up, the Bowral Grade Six side is currently running second, five points behind the leaders Picton, the team against whom we’ll clash on the 12th. Stay tuned!
  3. Again for those who haven’t yet caught up with Club news, manager Tony Dunn and his wife Kate have now concluded their tenure at the Club and interim manager Trevor Olsen will be in charge until a new manager is appointed. Our thanks and best wishes go to Tony and Kate.
  4. The Strategic Plan prepared by Committee Member Ian Duncan on behalf of the Men’s Bowling Committee is on its way to the Board of the Club. Committee members will keep you posted on progress.

Social Bowls Wednesday April 2nd

Well, organisation of social bowls survived the storm that was the Wiggles Show for pre-school aged kids at the Club! Actually, the timing worked out well as the Show concluded on time at 11.30 and most of the mums, grandparents and kids had left the Club shortly after. Thirty-two bowlers turned out on what was a perfect day for bowls, temperature in the low twenties and a gentle breeze from somewhere between the north and south-east. The Match Committee organised two games of pairs and four of triples.

In a pairs game on rink 7, Mark ‘midshipman’ Shelvey and Joe ‘skip’ O’Donnell battled against Shane ‘newnee’ Harvey and Paul ‘macmac’ McInerney. Being new to pairs was no problem at the start to Paul and Shane as they ripped the opening to lead 9 – 0 after three ends. Then, clunk, they hit the wall . . . a very solid wall. Mark and Joe found their line and length and were taking no prisoners. They won end after end, but it took them until the sixteenth before they hit the lead. Overall, they won all but four of the last eighteen ends with Shane and Paul clinging on hoping for a turnaround. No turnaround, as Joe and and Mark got home 20 – 15.

The Joe O’Donnell style that got him home!

In the second pairs match, Mark ‘straw’ Barrow and Graham ‘phoneless’ Hartnup took on Alex ‘wides’ Christlo and Wal ‘speckles’ Markow. Mark and Graham were chuffed to crack a five shotter on the second end and all smiles at 5 – 1 up after three. And then the wheel fell off the barrow completely as Alex and Wal won the next eight ends on the trot to lead 20 – 5. Smelling salts time! Mark and Graham managed to win five ends on the run home but with Alex all over the jack in a brilliant display of leading, they were pushing the wheel-less barrow up a giant hill. In the end, it was a big win to Alex and Wal 29 – 10.

Alex worked some magic in a great win with Wal!

On rink 9, Barb ‘stretch’ Wainberg, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn faced off against Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk, Richard ‘ten-pin head’ Denman and the maestro Robin Staples. With the Staples trio all on fire, they blitzed the opening to lead 14 – 1 after seven ends. Another game where the good old fashioned smelling salts would have come in handy! Anyway, something happened as Mick’s team kicked into action and got the score to 7 – 14. Robin’s team then steadied and pushed their lead to 21 – 7 and then 24 – 9 until a late burst by team Flynn saw the deficit reduced and the final score 24 – 18. Man of the match, in a game with plenty of good ones, was Richard D!

In a high quality game, none was better than Richard D!

On the next rink, Bruce ‘scratched’ Yahl, Don ‘gentleman Chapman and the ebullient Chris Forrester vied for bragging rights against Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight, Terry ‘puff’ Norwood and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis. In an astonishingly cruel opening, Chris’ team smashed the opposition to lead 11 – 0 after six ends. Ouch, very painful! Chris was in blistering form and it was looking like a long day at the office for the opposition. Gordon rallied the bedraggled troops and got them on the card. In fact, they won five of eight ends and were within seven shots after the fourteenth. However, that was as close as they got, as Bruce, Don and Chris charged ahead. The final score of 22 – 13 was a clear indication of the superiority of Chris’ team.

Chris had a blinder of a game!

On rink 11, Graham ‘dragon’ Denman, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt tussled for supremacy against Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. Dave’s team won the early ends to lead 4 – 1 after four and were looking the more confident. However, urged on Graham’s boys edged closer  at 4 – 6, but by the tenth end had slipped further behind at 5 – 9. In a back and forth exchange, the next six ends were shared and Dave’s trio still led by four. It was at that point that Dave, Barry and Neville each gained the upper hand over their opponent and they ground out what was a decisive victory in the end of 22 – 13.

Barry had a good game as lead for the victors!

In the final game on rink 12, Jim Larkin, Mike ‘grappling’ Hook and Viv ‘third’ Gear tackled Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and John ‘junior’ Cummins. Although they dropped a shot on the first end, junior’s team were quickly into stride and led 11 – 3 after eight ends . . . another game for smelling salts or oxygen! Well, maybe it was the water, but something worked as Viv’s team stormed back into the game and with a sweet five shotter on the twelfth they grabbed the lead at 13 – 12. And, in a dogged display, they were still in front by a shot after sixteen ends and things were as tight as the proverbial. Junior’s team then edged to the lead and the margin was two with one end to play. In a great finish, they grabbed another shot and so the final score was 20 – 17 in a great game.

Junior on the mat, all style and finesse!
