Social Bowls Wednesday
Twenty-nine eager bowlers turned out for social bowls on what was a pleasant Wednesday afternoon. The breeze from the west was a little stiffer than most would have preferred, but overall there was very little to complain about. The Match Committee organised five games of triples with one game having a swing bowler leading for both sides.
On rink 8, Graham Hartnup, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales took on Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Ian ‘cool one’ Duncan and the wily Bob Edwards, and it was Bob’s team that were on the scorecard early. They won the first four ends to lead 10 – 0 and had the Grahams and Peter scratching their heads. The scratching must have helped because Peter’s team did then win a couple of ends, but by the tenth end they were still well behind at 4 – 17. Team Morales did get it to 8 – 17 but then Bob’s boys re-applied the pressure and took a strangle hold on the match. With Joel having yet another fine game and Ian having some very good ends, team Edwards cruised to a comfortable victory of 28 – 11.
Joel is in cracking form!
In the 18-ender on rink 9, Grahame ‘pop’ Denman was swing lead for John Fleming and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie on the one hand and Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards and Neville ‘the’ Tanner on the other. Paul’s team got off to a scorching start winning the first four ends and having the opposition reeling at 9 – 0. Where was the oxygen?! Well, Neville’s team found oxygen, or something, because they grabbed four shots on the next end and they were on their way. Ends then became tight, but it was team Rubie that was winning most of them so that they led 15 – 8 with five ends to play. Not waving the white flag, Nev’s team had the better of the closing ends, but disappointingly for them, fell two shots short; victory to team Rubie 19 – 17.
And yet another victory for Mr ‘Ricochet’!
On rink 10, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis faced off against Paul McInerney, Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and George Hindi. Both sides won early ends and the score was 6 – 4 in favour of George’s team after four. Team Hindi nabbed three shots on the next end, and by the eleventh had pushed the lead out to 14 – 7. This became 17 – 7, but then Gordon fired up his team and with a mouth-watering five shotter on the sixteenth end they were within two shots. Game on! George’s team steadied however, won the next three ends and led 23 – 15 with two to play. Never-say-die Lewis rallied the troops to win those last two but, unfortunately for them, it was not enough; victory to George’s team by 23 – 20.
In the next game, nonagenarian Bill Meredith, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and the admiral Peter Watson battled against newcomer Jim Larkin, Arnie ‘Rosie’ Lenczuk and the phlegmatic Mike Holmewood. Mike’s team opened with a sizzling four shotter and were feeling very good about things with a lead of 7 – 2 after five ends. However, the admiral’s team then found some better touch and by the eleventh end had reduced the deficit to three shots. With newcomer Jim starting to hit his straps, team Holmewood got the better of their opponents and with a five shotter on the sixteenth end led 19 – 9. And then, out of the blue, a tornado struck . . . a Watson team tornado! In a cyclonic finish, team Watson scored a stunning fifteen shots on the last five ends to swamp their opponents! The final score was 24 – 19! Oh ouch!
Peter ‘admiral’ Watson was in fine form especially over the last five ends!
In the final match on rink 12, Wal Markow, Terry ‘Preston’ Norwood and the suave Steven Goddard faced off against Alex Christlo, Dave Charlesworth and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. The opening ends were very tight and after five ends the scores were locked at 3 all. The sides continued to fairly much match each other so that by the end of ten ends Mick’s team was a shot in front. With Alex bending those wide curlers onto the jack, Dave popping some in close and Mick in splendid drawing form, team Flynn kept their noses in front. With three ends to play Mick’s team were four to the good and showing no signs of weakening. However, Steven’s team ground away, took shots on the next two and were within touch with the last coming up. And in a ripper of a last end, Steven’s team could claim only one shot and fell agonizingly short; victory to Mick and his men by 19 – 18. And the jackpot win to this group brought some unexpected comfort!
Mick is in scintillating form at the moment!
