BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY AUGUST 27th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY AUGUST 27th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to begin with:

  1. The Major Mixed Pairs Championship came to a conclusion on the 27th with the playing of the final. More on that below.
  2. The BBC Major Pairs Championship is open for entry and the schedule is posted on the notice board. Because the weather has interfered with other competitions, the Major Pairs entry will remain open until September 13th. So, come on gents, get organised and get yourselves entered into this prestigious event!
  3. The RSL Shield competition will get underway on Saturday August 30th with the playing of the first round. In an attempt to increase participation and share the talent around, there have been changes this year to the arrangements. Happily, we have managed eight teams of four members and there are a few reserves who can substitute if necessary. The teams and further conditions of play will be posted on the notice board on the afternoon of Thursday August 28th, and there will be a separate email distributed to help explain the arrangements.
  4. The September edition of the newsletter Jack Chat will be issued shortly. Happy reading, and remember, if you have any suggestions, please pass them along.
  5. Committee member Ian Duncan is still working on a web site for the Men’s Bowling Club and making good progress. Hopefully this will be up and running very soon. Stay tuned!
  6. And some more great news from the Women’s Committee; Reta South, Lynne Boshier and Gail Fraser are now the reigning Women’s Triples Champions for the Nepean Highlanders Region having won the event last weekend. Hearty congratulations ladies, you are real Champs!

BBC Mixed Pairs Championship

On a somewhat blustery, cold afternoon, the final of the Mixed Pairs Championship got underway when Reta South and Bob Edwards took to rink 9 to take on defending title holders Jim Neely and Gail Fraser. In a tight opening, both teams won early ends for the score to 2 all after three. It was then that Gail and Jim found top form and went on a stunning run of success. They won ten of the next eleven ends, so that by the fourteenth, they held a commanding 22 – 4 lead. However, Bob and Reta were not about to surrender – they were down but not out! They won the fifteenth end, then the sixteenth . . . and they kept winning end after end. In fact, they won the last seven ends to chip away at the deficit. However, for Reta and Bob it was not to be; Gail and Jim had established too big a lead and they held on to take the title (again!), this time by six shots at 22 – 16. Congratulations Jim and Gail on a great win; you really are a formidable pairing.

Wonderful delivery! Little wonder their names are all over the trophy!

Wednesday Social Bowls

Twenty-four hardy souls braved the arctic conditions for a game on Wednesday afternoon, and, given the earlier rain, all four triples matches were allocated to the Waratah Green.

On rink 8, Wal Markow, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Robin Staples tussled against Alex ‘wides’ Christlo, Ian Duncan and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn, and although Mick’s team opened with a three, Robin’s team grabbed the next four ends to lead 7 – 3. Mick’s trio moved the score to 6 – 8, but by the halfway point it was 12 – 6 to team Staples. With the ends still tight, they advanced this to 15 – 8 by the sixteenth, only to have Mick’s team to be within four by the twentieth. In a tight last end, Robin’s team held on to take the honours at 17 – 12.

In the match on rink 10, Terry Salter, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and Clive Neutze battled against Shane Harvey, Neville Tanner and the cobbler himself Gordon Lewis, and in a blaze high quality bowling from the cobbler, his team took the first eight ends to lead 16 blot! Reach for the oxygen time!! Well, something worked, because Clive and his boys won eight of the next nine ends to be within three shots. Stung into action, Gordon’s trio grabbed a four shotter, to steady the ship, and when they grabbed another on the last they were all smiles at 26 – 15.

In the next game, Barb Wainberg, Peter Flight and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell faced off against Barry Werfel, Richard ‘ten pin’ Denman and Terry Norwood, and in another one-sided opening, Joe’s lot won the first seven ends amassing fifteen shots and having their opposition gasping for heart starters! Well, prayers or heart starters aside, team Norwood spluttered into action winning four of the next five ends and looking something like bowlers. No, not really, as Joe’s team regained control and wiped their opponents to the tune of 27 – 15. Ouch!

In the final match on rink 12, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Arnie Lenczuk and Viv ‘first’ Gear battled against Graham Hartnup, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Dave Charlesworth, and it was Dave’s team that was quickly on top to lead 6 – 2 after six ends. This soon became 8 – 4, and when the score moved to 16 – 4 after thirteen, the signs were very ominous for team Gear. Unfortunately, ‘the dragon’  and Arnie were having great problems with the wind and the ‘leaning tower’ was cashing in big time. The final score was 27 – 7 to Dave’s boys.

Saturday August 23rd Social Bowls

Twenty-one eager beavers turned out a roll on a very pleasant Saturday afternoon. One game of pairs and three of triples (one with swing lead) were sent out onto the Waratah Green by the Match Committee.

In the pairs game Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis and Chris Forrester took on the might of Ross Barber and Greg Lewis, and a mouth-watering five on the second end saw Ross and Greg on top. However, Gordon and Chris hit their straps and by the tenth the scores were locked at 13 all. Gordon and Chris then edged to the lead but by the nineteenth, it was again all square. Ross and Greg then held firm to edge their opponents and get home 23 – 20 in a beauty!

On rink 9, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Richard Denman and Robin Staples battled against Charles ‘morse’ Coode, Arnie Lenczuk and Mick Flynn, and it was team Flynn that was quickly into stride as they edged their way to a 9 – 3 lead after eleven ends. And then, as so often happens, fortunes changed! Robin’s team hit scoring mode and began to claw back the deficit. However, despite team Staples winning the last four ends, Mick’s team held on for a 16 – 13 victory.

With Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman as swing, Mike Hook and Rowena Coode tussled against Graham Hartnup and Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight, and with a cracking five shotter, team Flight left rubber on the road! Undaunted, Rowena’s team found touch, and by the ninth end the score was 8 all. This then became 9 all, but by the seventeenth end Peter’s team had gained a four shot lead. However, when team Coode cracked their own five shotter, they hit the lead for the first time and held on to win 18 – 17!

In the final game on rink 11, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Graham Hunt and Stephen Day tried to stare down Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Barb Wainberg and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards, and scoring was fairly even until Bob’s team notched up consecutive threes to lead 10 – 5. Stung into action, Steve’s team won the next five ends and although they led, a massive six shotter put Bob’s team back on top. It was short-lived though, as team Day steamrolled back into the lead and held on to win 25 – 21.
