Social Bowls Wednesday
Thirty-six bowlers turned out on what was a fairly muggy Wednesday afternoon. Amongst the number was Mark Shelvey, a newcomer having his first bowl and he fitted in very well with the group. Also present was Mr evergreen, the irrepressible nonagenarian Gordon Lewis AM who had celebrated his 92nd birthday on December 3rd! Congratulations Gordon, and congratulations to all others having a December birthday. With thirty-six bowlers, the Match Committee organised six games of triples.
In the 18-ender on rink 7, Shane Harvey, John Fleming and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie took on Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Jim Larkin and Neville ‘the’ Tanner. And what a tight game this turned out to be! Both teams scored early, but it was Paul’s team that edged to a 5 – 2 lead after six ends. And although they dropped a painful four shots on the seventh, they still held the lead at 9 – 6 after eleven ends. However, another four shotter to Neville’s team made up the difference and the teams then slugged it out over the last six ends. It was 12 all, then 15 all and with one end to play Neville’s team led by a shot. Far from done, Paul’s team grabbed a single on the last and it finished all tied up at 16 all. What a good one!
On rink 8, Alex Christlo, Wal Markow and the wily Bob Edwards battled against Mark Barrow, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. Dave’s team had the better of the opening ends to lead 6 – 1 after four. Bob got his team to then knuckle down and they won the next five ends. It was then 9 all after eleven ends, and then team Charlesworth edged ahead by 13 – 10 at the fourteenth. And then, out of the blue, Bob’s team asserted authority over the game! With all team Edwards bowlers on their game, they won all the remaining seven ends to torpedo their opponents and run out solid victors at 20 – 13. As lead, Alex is still managing those wide benders of his with guile and Wal ignores the back pain to trundle his speckles close to the jack.
On the next rink, Jill Harwood, Paul McInerney and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn tussled for honours against Graham ‘James’ Bond, Joe O’Donnell and Stephen ‘make-over’ Day. This was one of those games where one side made the running from the start and the other seemed to battle the whole way to get into the match. Mick’s team dominated the game from start to finish, accumulating a five shotter and three four shotters along the way. Stephen’s team did notch up a four of their own, but the seven ends they won amassed only fourteen shots. The final score in favour of Mick’s team was an impressive 35 – 14.
Mick’s a tough competitor and came out on top again!
In a tight match on rink 10, Ian ‘cool’ Duncan, Bruce Yahl and the suave Steven Goddard faced off against Rowena Coode, Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and the ebullient Chris Forrester. Chris’ team had the better of the opening four ends to lead 5 – 1. However, a scintillating five shotter on the sixth end had team Goddard on their way and they led 8 – 5 after seven ends. Ends were then tight and shots hard to come by, but Steven’s team held on to a slim lead of 10 – 7 after ten. They still led 12 – 8 after thirteen ends but at that point things shifted. Chris’ team started to outpoint the opposition and notched up five ends on the trot to lead 16 – 12. With three ends to play, team Forrester held firm and ran out winners by 18 – 14.
Chris and his team held on in a tight game!
On the next rink, newcomer Mark Shelvey, Viv ‘top’ Gear and the maestro Robin Staples took on Charles ‘enigma’ Coode, Arnie ‘one knee’ Lenczuk and Terry Norwood. Both teams scored early and after five ends the scores were locked at 4 all. With Viv in fine form, team Staples then won four of the next five ends to lead 12 – 7 at the halfway stage of the match. With Robin placing some fine shots in and Viv still drawing well, team Staples led by six after the fourteenth end. It was then that the game turned on its head! With Charles drawing more shots into the head and the skipper getting a few better bowls down, Terry’s team, against the run of play, won the last seven ends to run out eight shot victors at 23 – 15.
In the final match on rink 12, Joel ‘grr’ Hunt, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup and the irrepressible Gordon Lewis went head to head against Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and wily Owen Williams. With Joel on the jack from the start team Lewis began with a four and then led 7 – 0 after three ends. Owen’s team got themselves on the scorecard but were trailing by ten shots at 15 – 5 after eleven ends. Gordon and Joel were in red hot form and showing the opposition no mercy. A five shotter to Owen’s team on the twelfth end allowed them to steady, but it was only momentary as team Lewis continued their dominance. With a crushing last three ends, Gordon’s team came out on top by 28 – 14. The two birthday boys, Joel and Gordon, had absolute blinders!
Joel and Gordon were in great form and blitzed the opposition!
