BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 11th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 11th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to kick us off:

  1. The latest meeting of the Men’s Bowls Committee was held at 10am on Wednesday 11th and the draft minutes will be posted on the notice board in the next couple of days.
  2. The recently completed Consistency Singles, won by Robin Staples, was a very popular and successful competition. Of course, prior to the next staging of this event, the Committee will review the handicaps and scoring system to see if there is anything we can improve on.
  3. Our Major Singles Champion Dugald Braithwaite is considering entering the Champion of Champions event and, if he goes ahead, we wish him great success. This is a very prestigious tournament and we hope that Dugald makes his way into the event.
  4. Ian Duncan, a member of the Men’s Bowls Committee, is in the process of developing a ‘new’ website for Bowral Men’s Bowling and we understand the Club GM is about to get tech people to have a look at things. Stay tuned for an announcement.
  5. Trials for Pennants teams will continue on Saturday 14th. Nomination to play Pennants is still open, so if you haven’t yet entered your name we’d still like to hear from you. You need to be aware though, that the final selection of the teams will be on merit because Bowral will put forward the best available teams each week.
  6. Along with the playing of the Pennants trials, there will be social bowls on Saturday 14th for those who wish to participate.
  7. The sale of items of the old ‘red’ uniform continues with Ian Duncan the man to contact. Keep in mind that these are cash sales only.
  8. The distribution of the new shirts is now just about completed, with Peter Flight and Ian Duncan to contact if you haven’t yet received yours. Also available at a cost of $25 (cash) are the new caps and ‘bucket’ hats. Again, Ian is the man to see!

Wednesday Social Bowls

On a very hot afternoon, forty eager bowlers turned out for a roll including Steven Goddard whom we hadn’t seen for a while. It was great to have you back on the green Steven along with our stalwart Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone who always brings a splash of colour to proceedings. Given the number, the Match Committee organised six games of triples and one of pairs.

On rink 3 of the Wilson Green, Wal Markow, Paul ‘ricochet Rubie and Dave Charlesworth walloped Alex Christlo, Paul McInerney and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn on the first five ends to lead 17 – 0 . . . where was the oxygen!?? Mick’s team notched up a two on the next end, but by the halfway point were behind 2 – 27!  However, they did fare better in the second half, although the deficit was far too great for them to reel in the opposition. 35 – 14 was the final score. Ouch!

On the next rink, Graham ‘stirred’ Bond, Arnie Lenczuk and Clive Neutze won the first couple of ends against Shane Harvey, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and the maestro Robin Staples but were down 3 – 9 by the sixth. With Don sliding his red demons into the heads, Robin’s team pushed their lead to 14 – 6 by the fourteenth and had the opposition under real pressure. Things didn’t change in the run through the back ends with Robin’s team victorious at 24 – 12.

On rink 5, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Peter Flight and the venerable Gordon Lewis grabbed a three shotter on the first only to drop the next seven ends on the trot to Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Terry Salter and Ross ‘trim’ Barber and trail 3 – 12. Gordon’s team got the score to 12 – 17 by the sixteenth and were in with a real chance. However, Ross’ team had other ideas, and closed out the game at 21 – 16.

In the fourth game on the Wilson Green, Peter Marshall, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and junior Cummins had a slow start against Col Stone, Neville Tanner and Peter ‘junior’ Martin, so slow in fact that they trailed 2 – 14 after ten ends. They did get the score to 8 – 16, but were never strong contenders in the end, as Peter’s trio ran out strong winners at 20 – 11.

In a pairs game on rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Chris ‘the’ Forrester were, although notching up a three on the first, soon under the pump at 11 – 3 down to Barb Wainberg and Steven ‘suave’ Goddard after five ends. With Barb in good form, team Goddard kept piling on the pressure and Chris and Denis were struggling to find a way to break through. A four shotter to Steven and Barb then gave them a strong lead, and they coasted home 25 – 15 winners.

On rink 9, Graham Denman, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Joe O’Donnell had a very slow start to be 2 – 12 down after six ends to Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle, Ian Duncan and Viv ‘ninth’ Gear. They shifted the score to 5 – 12, but when they were 5 – 19 down after twelve ends they were in  deep . . . well . . . trouble!! With the ‘rowdy’ one firing in some fine bowls, team Gear was in no mood for mercy, and drove on to a resounding 29 – 9 victory. Phew, smelling salts please!

In the final match, Clive Hutchens, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and Terry Norwood locked horns with Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Richard Denman and the wily Bob Edwards and the scores were close through the first six ends. With really tight ends, the scores were then locked at 9 all after eleven, but a couple of four shotters gave team Norwood the momentum that they were able to carry through to the end. 21 – 13 was the score when stumps were pulled at 18 ends.
