BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 18th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and bobs for general consumption:
- The draft minutes of the meeting of the Men’s Bowling Committee on February 11th have now been posted on the notice board. Bowlers, if you have any queries check with your president, vice-president or any member of the committee.
- Also on the notice board awaiting confirmation of availability is the schedule for the pennants trial games to be staged on Saturday 21st at 12.30. Selected bowlers are asked to tick names to indicate that you are available.
- Social bowls on Wednesday were played on the Wilson Green which provided an OK surface. It was running at about 11/12, so when we can have it double cut diagonally and rolled, rolled, rolled it should flatten out better.
- Bowlers are reminded that the Executive has purchased Club caps and bucket hats which may be purchased for $25 each. Ian Duncan is the man to see, and sales are cash only.
- With the Pennant trial matches being played on Saturday, there will still be social bowls for anyone who wishes to have a game. The Pennant trials will be on the Wilson Green so any social bowls will probably be allocated to the Waratah Green.
Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty bowlers turned out for social bowls on the 18th, so the Match Committee organised five matches of triples. These games were allocated to the Wilson Green so that bowlers could test their skills on the grass. Most found the going fairly ‘tough’ with the surface slightly sluggish at about 11/12.
On rink 2, Alex Christlo, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and junior Cummins made a very slow start against Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Richard Denman and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales to trail 1 – 7 after five ends. They did nudge the score to 5 – 9, but three ends later it was 5 – 17 and they were really being stretched. Peter’s trio seemed to have their measure and poured on the pressure as the game progressed. Snatching a five shotter on the run home, Peter’s team logged a huge win at 29 – 9. Now, last week the write-up had junior as a losing skip which is here acknowledged as an error . . . apologies John, but no apologies needed today!!
On the next rink, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle, Paul ‘rowdy’ Rubie and Mick ‘rowdy’ Flynn also made a slow start against Charles ‘morse’ Coode, Dave Charlesworth and Bob Edwards to trail 1 – 8 after eight ends. With the skip in good touch, team Edwards kept the pressure on the opposition to lead 13 – 3 on the eleventh. Such was their dominance that Bob’s trio looked as though they would keep Mick’s team to single figures. However, in a salvage operation team Flynn snaffled a couple of doubles on the last two ends to finally make it to double figures. 24 – 10 was the final score.
On rink 4, Wal Markow, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and the dasher Clive Neutze were on even terms at 3 all with Peter Marshall, Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan and Viv ‘low’ Gear after five ends. Viv’s team then won the next three ends but a strong reply from team Neutze saw them in front 12 – 8 after twelve ends. Clive’s team then continued to get the better of Viv’s, and when they cracked a monstrous SIX shotter on the twentieth, they were home and hosed. The final score was 27 – 12.
On the next rink, Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Joe O’Donnell and Mick Fisher opened very strongly against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Owen Williams and the maestro Robin Staples to lead 7 – 1 after six. With Joe in red hot form, team Fisher continued to dominate proceedings to lead 16 – 4 on the twelfth end, and team Staples was looking to the heavens for support! Unfortunately for them little came and the drubbing continued through to the final end. 25 – 12 was how the game finished. It looks as though Joe’s a natural on the grass!
In the final game, Barb Wainberg, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Chris ‘the’ Forrester grabbed a five shotter on the second end but were all square at 7 shots on the sixth against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Terry Norwood and the evergreen Gordon Lewis. And the next end saw a tornado as Chris’ team had SEVEN shots with two feet of the jack and suddenly led 14 – 7! Seven shots . . . ouch, that really hurt, and when Gordon’s trio dropped a SIX on the tenth end, they were in great strife at 12 – 21 down. However, showing great G & T, they dug in and won seven of the final nine ends to finish with some respectability. Skipper Chris had a fine game as did Barb for the victors who got home 29 – 22.
