BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 26th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some general info for a start:
- Pennants continues on Saturday March 1st with Bowral playing host to the side from Robertson. Bowral currently sits on top of the table, and hopes to stay there with a strong performance this weekend. There should be some fine bowls to observe for anyone who seeks a relaxing afternoon.
- There will be organised social bowls on Saturday, but the starting time will be 1pm and not the usual 12.30. This will allow the pennants bowlers from both clubs plenty of time to roll up prior to their kick-off time.
- Men’s Committee member Ian Duncan has now summarised the results of the survey recently conducted, and this summary will be forward to members asap. The Men’s Committee has begun to analyse the results and will continue this at its next meeting on March 12th.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee had its latest meeting on Wednesday February 26th and the draft minutes will be posted on the notice board asap. The next meeting will be held on March 12th at 10am.
- The upgrade of the Wilson Green continues and so this green remains off limits. The Men’s Committee hopes that the rolling, rolling and rolling will continue to seek that flat, smooth surface that will allow us back there for bowls. Hopefully, the rolling, rolling and rolling of the Lewis Green will also bring that surface up to bowls standard as well.
Social Bowls Wednesday
Thirty-eight bowlers fronted for a roll on what was a very warm Wednesday afternoon. It really was a day for slip, slop and slap, keep up the fluid levels and make good use of the shade cloth. The Match Committee organised five games of triples and two of pairs.
On rink 7, Jim Larkin, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and ‘wily scot’ Owen Williams took on Shane ‘nee’ Harvey, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Viv ‘second’ Gear. Perhaps it was the temperature, but Owen’s team got off to a flyer and led 10 – 1 after six ends. However, Viv’s team hit back strongly, and by the tenth had jumped to the lead at 12 – 10. Having none of it, Owen urged his team on and they took over the scoring to lose only two ends on the run home. In the end, it was a comfortable victory to team Williams at 23 – 17, and the run of success for Viv’s teams finally came to an end.
The wily one Owen racked up another win!
On the next rink, Bill ‘jockey’ Dodwell, Wal ‘speckles’ Markow and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie battled against John McGuire, Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel and Joe ‘skip’ O’Donnell. In this match, both sides scored early but it was Paul’s team that edged to a 5 – 2 lead after six ends. They then pushed the lead to 10 – 3 on the eleventh, and things were looking bleak for Joe’s lot. However, they dug deep, found inspiration and by the seventeenth it was 12 all. Game on! It was then one shot difference with one end to play, and a single to Joe’s trio made it 14 all. What a good one!
Skips, Paul and Joe played out a draw!
In another triples game on rink 9, Alex ‘wides’ Christlo, Jill ‘hollywood’ Harwood and Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk faced off against Joel ‘grr’ Hunt, Rowena Coode and Richard ‘denman’ Denman. Although they dropped a double on the first end, Arnie’s team soon bested the opposition to lead 7 – 2 after five. They continued to get the better of Richard’s trio so that by the eleventh the score was 14 – 7, and the signs were ominous! Whatever Richard’s team served up it seemed that Arnie’s lot would better! And they did, because things didn’t change in the back half, and team Lenczuk coasted home at 20 – 12.
No ‘dickie knee’ to worry about today; Arnie shows how it’s done!
In a pairs game on rink 10, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup and the suave Steven Goddard tussled for honours against Bruce ‘scratched’ Yahl and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards. Graham and Steven had much the better of the opening ends to lead 13 – 2 after eight. Oxygen was needed on the menu for one team at least!! With only hot air to draw on, the dominance continued and the score was out to 18 – 3 by the twelfth. And then the oxygen arrived (or something in the water) and Bob and Bruce won the next five ends to be within three at 15 – 18. Steven and Graham steadied, won a couple of ends and then survived the last two to get home 21 – 19. What a great game!
That’s how it’s done; the Steven Goddard style!
On rink 11, Barb ‘stretch’ Wainberg, Nev ‘the’ Tanner and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn fought against Ken Looke, Charles ‘code’ Coode and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. Despite notching up a double on the first end, Mick’s trio was soon under the pump and down 3 – 12 after six! Divine intervention required! With none on offer, Dave’s team continued to get the better of Mick’s and by the twelfth led 22 – 4. Where was the defib unit! Something! Anything! But no, no change was in the offing, and Dave’s team continued on its merry way. The final score was 30 – 11. Ouch!
In the pairs game on rink 12, Ted ‘barry’ McPhee and Chris ‘ebullient’ Forrester bumped chests against Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and young Scott Kennon. And it was high quality bowls from the start in this one. With Ted and Chris in cracking form, they won six of the first seven ends to lead 8 – 1. Peter and Scott were also in good form, but Ted and Chris managed to consistently sneak inside or take them out whenever they held shot. The score was 17 – 4 after sixteen ends, but a couple of three shotters improved Scott and Peter’s position. However, it was all too little and Chris and Ted cruised home at 20 – 13.
Ted ‘Barry’ McPhee had a blinder to lead his team home!
In the final game, Mark ‘straw’ Barrow, Mike ‘left’ Hook and John ‘junior’ Cummins sought bragging rights against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan and Terry ‘puff’ Norwood. In a very tight opening, both sides were on the scorecard early, and it was 6 – 4 to junior’s trio after six ends. Things continued to be close until the eleventh end when Terry’s team pulled off a huge, mouth-watering, sweet six shotter! Yes, readers a massive six shot haul . . . and followed with a four. So leading 19 – 9 after thirteen ends, they were all smiles. Then the wheels fell off the cart . . . completely! Team Norwood lost end after end and, hanging on by fingernails, were very fortunate to escape with a 21 all draw. Phew! In a nerve-wracking game, Grahame and Mike were the pick of the bowlers.
Graham, the dragon, Denman had an excellent game as lead!
