BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 28th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 28th       (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some snippets:

  1. The Grade Three Pennants team will play host to the team from Campbelltown on Saturday. With a strong win in round 1, the boys can enter this match with confidence. Bowl well men!
  2. The Grade Six Pennants team will make the trek to Taralga to take on the locals. The Tigers are always very difficult to match at home but the Bowral men and women are keen to take them on. We wish them plenty of muscle for the encounter.
  3. The BBC Championship singles competition continues on Sunday March 3rd. In the semi-finals at 10am defending champion Dugald Braithwaite will take on Ash Lewis, and Mick Anderson will play Dave Coltman. The final will follow at 1pm in the afternoon. Best of good fortune to all bowlers.
  4. Congratulations to President Stephen Della on his selection to play in a Zone 5 seniors trial match against Zone 16 at Picton on March 3rd. You take our best wishes for excellent bowling Doc.
  5. Due to a home Grade Three Pennants game and Grade Six Pennants trial matches on Saturday March 9th there will be no organised social bowls on that day. The Waratah Green will be given over completely to the Pennants games so any roll-ups will need to be on the Wilson or Lewis Greens.

Social Bowls

Thirty-four bowlers turned out for social bowls on a fairly warm, humid afternoon. A gusty breeze persisted all afternoon and, although tricky at times, could not be blamed for those wayward bowls, especially those that snaked across into the adjoining rink! One game of pairs and five of triples were organised by the Match Committee.

In the pairs match on rink 11, Rowena Coode and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze took on Neville Tanner and ‘gentleman’ Don Chapman. Don and Neville won the first three ends to lead by five but by the sixth end team Neutze had pegged them back to 6 – 8. Some tight ends followed so that by the twelfth Don and Neville’s lead was still two shots at 11 – 9. However, a four shot haul on the next end, followed by a three a couple of ends later, gave them a seven shot buffer. Far from done Rowena and Clive had the better of the final ends but fell one shot short with a two on the final end. 20 – 19 was the final score in favour of Don and Neville.

On rink 7, Harold ‘stentless’ Wall, Barry Werfel and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales battled against Jill Harwood, David Charlesworth and Owen ‘wily Scot’ Williams. Team Williams jumped out of the blocks to lead 9 – 1 after four ends. Five shots on the next end got Peter’s team going, but team Williams kept up the pressure to lead 14 – 11 at the halfway point. Owen’s team then more than matched anything their opponents could throw at them and they stretched their lead to 21 – 14 by the fifteenth end. Try as they might, Peter could not find a miracle and Owen’s team ran out comfortable winners 26 – 17.

The ‘wily one’ Owen is difficult to beat on current form.

On the rink beside them, Charles Coode, Joe O’Donnell and Charles Stewart battled for honours against Bill Meredith, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone and Chris ‘unflappable’ Forrester. Both teams won early ends so that by the fifth the scores were locked at 3 all. However, a four shot haul on the next end and another four shots three ends later shot Chris’ team into the ascendancy. They led 15 – 6 after eleven ends and although they dropped four shots along the way, they had pushed the lead out to 20 – 10 by the sixteenth. But the game wasn’t quite over . . . a five and a couple of two’s had Charles’ team within two shots with one end to play and it was game on! However, Chris’ team then steadied, grabbed three shots and victory at 24 – 19.

Chris is in really good form at present!

In the 18-ender on rink 9, Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards, Phil Payne and Paul ‘rowdy’ Rubie took on John Fleming, Bill ‘the’ Pope and John ‘junior’ Cummins. With junior back at the helm, this match took on a much more familiar look than the previous week. Both sides won early ends but a four shotter on the sixth put Paul’s team in the lead at 7 – 2. However, Junior’s team won the next four ends to have the score tied up at 7 all. As the second half of the game unfolded, team Cummins edged to the lead so that, with one end to play, they led by two shots. Junior’s team held firm to score two shots and take the bragging rights at 16 – 12. Surely, an 18-end challenge to all-comers will be issued soon!?!

‘junior’ Cummins benefitted from the coastal break!

On rink 12, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Mark Rundle and the wily Bob Edwards took on Alex Christlo, Wal Marco and Arny ‘man in black’ Lenczuk. This was one of those games when one side didn’t ever really get into stride and the other had a good day. Arny’s team won twelve of the eighteen completed ends and Bob’s team could only manage six. Although they dropped a shot on the first end, Arny’s team led 6 – 1 after five and by the ninth had extended that to 18 – 4. By the fifteenth end they led by fifteen shots, but a much tidier finish saw Bob’s team reduce that to eleven. The final score was 24 – 13 in favour of Alex, Wal and ‘the man in black’.

Arny’s team had a big win!

The final match was a triples in which Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Stephen Day clashed with Denis Lees, Terry Norwood and skipper Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. A sizzling six shots on the first end saw a very happy team Flynn, but the smiles were very quickly removed as Stephen’s boys hit their straps to win five of the next six ends and lead 12 – 8. Mick’s team hung in and by the twelfth end trailed by only one shot at 13 – 14. Stephen’s team then edged further ahead, but a four to team Flynn on the seventeenth end meant that they were still only one behind. From that point however, team Day crushed their opponents! With a six on the eighteenth end and a five on the last, they buried the opposition to run out 32 – 20 victors. Ouch!

Stephen Day had a great day as skip!
