Some Reminders
- Still an oops! A few groups forgot to rewind the shade cloth after play yesterday. Come on chaps, it has to be rewound to get the best out of the cloth. If you need a hand to do it, call on some of the bigger guys before you leave the green.
- And another oops; a few bowlers are still using the blue rink marker cans for garbage rather than the bin itself situated on the corner of the rink. Please help your Bowling Committee members by placing any waste straight into the bin.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee is working up a survey to get the view of members on some issues and to find out what we need to concentrate on. The survey will be sent out by email so keep your eyes peeled for that. It won’t take long to complete . . . unless of course you have a lot to say!
- And huge congratulations to John ‘junior’ Cummins for his Australia Day nomination as a community hero for the many years of service ‘junior’ has given to the local RSL. The community is very proud of you John, as are your fellow bowlers, and you are most deserving of being recognised in this way. Good on you mate!
Wednesday Social Bowls
A very fine number of thirty-eight bowlers turned out for a roll on a cloudy but pleasant Wednesday afternoon. The number included newcomer John McGuire, a former bowler from many years back, and visitor Chris Day here from Bundaberg to savour the pleasures of the Southern Highlands and drink beer with his brother Stephen. Given the number of bowlers, the Match Committee organised two games of pairs and five of triples.
On rink 7, Arnie ‘munch’ Lenczuk, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Peter ‘admiral’ Watson took on Barb Wainberg, Mike ‘grappling’ Hook and Mick ‘potty potters’ Flynn. Although they dropped singles on the first three ends, Mick’s team won the next four to lead 5 – 3. However, a four shotter to Peter’s team on the eighth, and another on the thirteenth had them firmly in front at 14 – 8. And from there, they didn’t look back; they dropped only two singles, and when they snatched a mouth-watering six . . . yes readers six shotter on the twentieth, they had the opposition completely shattered! 28 – 10 was the final score.
In a pairs game on rink 8, Chris ‘bundy’ Day and Stephen ‘makeover’ Day had a great tussle against Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Terry ‘puff’ Norwood. With Chris feeling his way on a foreign surface, Graham and Terry got the jump on the Days and led 6 – 0 after four ends. They then pushed the score to 9 – 1 after seven and looked fairly confident. However, the Days had other ideas; they both found good touch, won six of the next seven ends and had the scores locked at 10 all! Game on and real pressure! However, Graham and Terry responded by grabbing a very welcome five shotter and followed up with a three. With breathing space, they then shared the remaining ends to run out victors 23 – 14.
Graham put down some very timely good bowls for his side!
In the 18-ender on rink 9, Shane Harvey and ‘junior’ Cummins battled for bragging rights against John ‘classical’ Fleming and ‘ricochet’ Rubie. With ‘sub’ the Pope itching to enter the fray and nagging ‘junior’, team Cummins lost four of the opening five ends to trail 1 – 5. With a take no prisoners attitude the opposition, John and Paul, then pushed their lead out to 9 – 5 after nine ends, and it was at this point that the Pope was then ‘tagged’ into the game by junior. This completely blind-sided the opposition who then crumpled into submission, lost the plot and the lead. Team Cummins, with sub, won seven of the last eight ends (including ends nineteen and twenty in this eighteen ender!?!?!) and ran out victors at 17 – 14!
These spring chickens are now itching to push past the 18-end barrier . . . tag teaming too!!
On rink 10, Bruce ‘scratched’ Yahl, Ted ‘mr ed’ McPhee and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards took on Jill ‘hollywood’ Harwood, Ian ‘mr cool’ Duncan and Richard ‘denman’ Denman. Despite dropping singles on the first two ends, Richard’s team was soon into stride and led 5 – 2 after four. Dropping a two and a three brought them thumping to earth, and by the eighth they were trailing 6 – 10. However, with Jill continuing her good form, Richard’s team then ran together four ends so that it was 10 all after twelve. And it was at that point that Bob’s team then took control of the match, winning all but one of the remaining ends, including a thumping five shotter. The final score was 23 – 11 to team Edwards.
Ted and Ian had a good tussle as seconds!
On the next rink, Joel ‘grr’ Hunt, newcomer John McGuire and the maestro Robin Staples faced off against Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales. Although they dropped singles on three of the first four ends, a whopping six shotter on the fifth end put Robin’s team solidly in the lead, and when they won the next four ends, they looked set for victory. And that’s the way things went . . . with Joel in terrific form as lead and John finding there was some muscle memory from all those years ago, and of course the maestro at the helm, team Staples was formidable indeed. Unfortunately, Peter’s team couldn’t get much traction as team Staples came home to the tune of 26 – 14.
It’s that man Joel again . . . another great game as lead!
Despite the Match Committee having to re-write the lost card for rink 12 (where did that card get to), Alex ‘wides’ Christlo, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and Joe ‘skip’ O’Donnell leapt into action against Wal ‘speckles’ Markow, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup and Viv ‘top’ Gear. And in a very tight opening with no quarter given, Viv’s team led 4 – 2 after five ends. With a very solid run, Joe’s team then hit the lead, but by the eleventh end the scores were locked at 9 all. It was then that Viv’s team really slipped into gear and a monumental seven shotter . . . yes a 7-shotter-7 shotter put them in the driver’s seat. Joe’s team certainly didn’t concede, but team Gear motored on to a comfortable 29 – 16 victory.
The style of the skippers; Viv and Joe on the mat!
In the final game on the outside rink, Bill ’emeritus’ Meredith, Mark Sheldon and the dapper nonagenarian Gordon Lewis did battle with Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Rick ‘lolly-pop’ Reynolds and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. Despite dropping a single on the first end, Gordon’s team (which included two ninety year olds) won six of the next seven ends to lead 15 – 2. Dave’s team, the young fellows, got their heads down to win five of the next eight ends and reduce the deficit. However, at that point they seemed to run out of steam and Gordon and his boys ground out a very solid victory at 23 – 15. And just to sweeten matters, this group netted the very healthy jackpot prize!
That Gordon Lewis style hasn’t changed in a very long time!
