BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JULY 24th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some info to start with:
- Bob Crowley and Kev Stafford have played their way into the semi-final of the Nepean Highlander Region (formerly Zone) senior pairs championship. This is a great achievement and hopefully they can keep the good form going. They play the semi at Austral Bowling Club on Saturday July 27th and maybe the final as well. Our best wishes go with them. Go get ’em boys!
- Bowlers are reminded that Wednesday September 4th will be a mixed triples day to celebrate Men’s and Women’s bowling in Bowral. More details on team formation will follow soon, but get that date in your diaries so that we can make that a cracker of a day.
- Members are asked to keep in mind that the blue rink markers are not rubbish containers, so could you please place garbage directly into the bins. This will save a committee member from having to chase around each Wednesday cleaning out the blue markers.
- The schedules for the RSL Shield competition are now on the board awaiting your entry. Grade three bowlers are to enter as pairs playing 3rd and 4th, and non-grade three bowlers enter as pairs to play lead and 2nd. Fours will then be randomly created by matching the two sets of pairs on the first morning of the competition which runs over the three weeks 17th, 24th and 31st of August. Come on fellows, it’s a great format so let’s see lots of entries.
Social Bowls Wednesday July 24th
After the horror weather of the weekend prior, fingers were crossed for at least a reasonable bowls day on Wednesday. And the weather Gods must have been listening to the prayers because a very comfortable day greeted the thirty-four bowlers who ventured onto the Waratah Green. Given the number, the Match Committee organised one game of pairs and five of triples.
In the game on rink 7, Jill Harwood, Arny ‘Rosie’ Lenczuk and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales took on Mike ‘fish’ Hook, Jim ‘gentleman’ Starkey (great to see you back after a short break Jim) and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. Mr Miraculous got his team cracking early and they charged out to a good lead of 7 – 2 after seven ends. However, with plenty of chat, Mick urged his team into action and by the thirteenth end the match was tied up at 10 all. It was then 11 all two ends later, and the game was there for either team to tie up. And it was then Peter’s team that came to the fore; from that point, team Morales dominated the game to come out on top by 20 – 12. Good stuff!
The ‘miraculous one’ got his team home . . . again!
In the pairs game on rink 8, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Bob ‘chin-sock’ Crowley battled for honours against Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt and the ‘mercurial’ Mike Holmewood. Both sides won early ends so that the score was 6 all after six ends. With Bob bowling really well, it was then that he and Mark forged to a solid lead of 14 – 7 by the halfway point of the match. Far from done, Joel and Mike got their heads down and came storming home in the back half. Still two shots down with one to play, Mike and Joel grabbed a two and tied up what was a cracking game at 16 all.
In the 18-ender on rink 9, Bill ‘the’ Pope, Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie sought bragging rights against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, gentleman Don Chapman and John ‘junior’ Cummins. Things were very tight early with only singles scored on the first five ends and those on the neighbouring rinks could feel the tension! Junior’s team then netted a three shotter and they were off and running. They led 9 – 4 at the halfway stage and then kept matching anything that Paul’s team could come up with. When they headed into the Club at beer o’clock, it was 16 – 11 in favour of team Cummins. And of course, they shared in the jackpot when it went off!!
The victor on the mat . . . the vanquished in the background!
On the next rink, Wal Markow, Peter ‘commodore’ Watson and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards faced off against Alex Christlo, Terry ‘PNE’ Norwood and the maestro Robin Staples. Robin’s team dominated the opening to lead 7 – 2 after five ends and things were looking bright for them. However, the game then flipped when Wal started to nestle near the jack and skipper Bob put in some superb bowls; from 2 – 7 down, they were 14 – 7 up and had the opposition quite bewildered! But then, however, the maestro came to the fore: with his lead and second fairly scratchy, Robin steadied the ship and steered it to the lead; three up with two ends to play. In a very tight finish, Bob’s team scored the three and the game ended in a draw 20 all!
Wal had some excellent ends and Robin salvaged a draw for his team!
In the triples game on rink 11, Paul McInerney, Dave Charlesworth and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze tussled against Barry ‘smurfel’ Werfel, Joe O’Donnell and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis. Gordon’s team dominated the early part of the game to lead 12 – 2 after eight ends, and although they dropped a six shotter (yes folk, a nasty six) on the ninth end, they led handsomely at the halfway stage by 17 – 8. And then the comeback started . . . Clive’s team won six of the next eight ends to be only three behind on the nineteenth end and had Gordon and his team quite jittery! In a desperate last couple of ends, Gordon’s team, much to Gordon’s relief managed to hang on . . . 22 – 17. What a game of two quite different halves!! And, happy days, this game shared in the jackpot!
In the final game it was Steven against Stephen: Ian ‘oh no, I’m against a Hunt again’ Duncan, Russell Dunstan and Steven ‘suave’ Goddard pitted against Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and Stephen ‘makeover’ Day. In a scorching start, team Day smothered the opposition to win the first five ends and lead 7 blot! Wow, reach for the oxygen! However, three ends later they were down 7 – 8 . . . only to then score singles on the next five ends and lead 12 – 8! A couple of four shotters then had Graham, Richard and Stephen well in front at 20 – 10 and they looked home and hosed! And so it was, despite losing four of the last five ends, team Day bowlers were all smiles as they sought those after bowls refreshments! Why not, 23 – 15 was a solid victory!
The Stephen Day style!
