BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JUNE 26th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some general information and reminders to begin with:
- That bowling wonder, the mighty atom Bill Meredith had his 92nd birthday on Tuesday June 25th. Congratulations Bill, and we hope you keep rolling them down for a long time yet.
- Long time member and wily bowler Neville Tanner has recently been under the knife for a knee operation. Reports are that all went well and that Neville will be back to taunt his opponents in due course.
- Nonagenarian Bill Pope had a ‘turn’ recently and investigations have revealed that he needs a cleanout of his cardiac arteries. He’s being operated on today (Friday 28th) and all his mates at the Club send him best wishes for a successful operation and a quick recovery.
- Another nonagenarian, the venerable Gordon Lewis AM, required a little assistance from the green last Wednesday as he wasn’t quite himself. Happily, the report is that tests have shown no major issues and that a couple of dietary adjustments should sort things. He was back to his best this Wednesday, bringing his team from behind to take out a victory.
- Members are reminded that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held at 10am on Sunday August 18th. All positions from President to Committee Member are open so let’s have those nominations rolling in.
- The Men’s and Women’s Bowling Clubs have got together to organise a Birthday Celebration bowls day on Wednesday September 4th. The day will celebrate the Women’s 85th bowling birthday and 110 years of bowling at the BBC. The day will be a mixed triples day commencing at 12 noon and the cost of $20 will cover green fees and and morning tea.
- Members are reminded that renewal of membership is now due, and that payment by the the 30th June gains entry into the draw for $100 BBC cards. There are only a few days until the 30th, so, if you haven’t already rejoined, quick action is required to be in the draw.
- For those interested in participating in Region (formerly Zone) events, there are schedules on the notice board for bowlers to make entries in the upcoming competitions.
- And congratulations again to Noel Fraser and Jim Neely who prevailed in the final of the Senior Men’s Pairs competition. Noel and Jim had a convincing win of 25 – 12 over the pairing of Greg and Ash Lewis last Sunday.
Social Bowls
Thirty-four bowlers turned out for social bowls on Wednesday and were greeted by a very pleasant winter afternoon. The Waratah Green was running around a very slick 18 and, together with a breeze out of the north-west, kept bowlers minds on the job. However tricky the green, there were still no excuses for those few bowls that snaked their way onto nearby rinks! No names! With thirty-four bowlers, the Match Committee organised five games of triples and one of pairs.
In the pairs game on rink 7, Wal Markow and Arny ‘Rosie’ Lenczuk took on Alex Christlo and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze. And what a cracking game this was! Both sides got onto the scorecard early but it was Wal and Arny who forged to a good lead of 13 – 3 after eight ends. Finding better touch, Alex and Clive won the next six ends however, and had the match all square. Wal and Arny again edged to the lead only to have Alex and Clive right on their tails with one end to play. And it was Wal and Arny who won the last and took out the honours 19 – 17. It was one of those slightly quirky results when the side which wins 13 ends to eight loses out!
Wal and Arny held on in a tight one to take home the bacon!
On the next rink, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Harold ‘stentless’ Wall and the venerable Bob Edwards faced off against Barry Werfel, Russell Dunstan and the miraculous one Peter Morales. And Mr Miraculous’ team worked wonders at the start to lead 9 – 0 after three ends, including a mouth-watering six shotter! The game then swung 180 degrees and the next six ends were won by team Edwards who had levelled the score at 9 all. With Bob barking out encouragement and his men getting bowls in the head, his team then won another seven ends consecutively to be well on top. They went on to a comfortable victory at 26 – 15.
Big man, big game; the Bob Edwards style!
In the 18-ender on rink 9, Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards, John Fleming and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie battled for bragging rights against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Graham Hartnup and John ‘junior’ Cummins. With plenty of chat and quite some needle, both sides won early ends and it was 4 – 3 to Mr Ricochet after four ends. Despite the ‘Fox’ putting far too many bowls near the jack, close ends continued and by the eleventh end junior’s team had edged to the lead by two shots at 10 – 8. Game on! Over the final ends however, Paul’s team outscored their illustrious opponents and ran out ecstatic winners 16 – 14. Oh, how sweet it is!
Keith, the fox, was at it again filling the space close to the jack!
On rink 10, Rowena Coode, Terry Norwood and Chris ‘irrepressible’ Forrester took on Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and Steven ‘suave’ Goddard. With all their bowlers on fire, team Forrester won four of the five opening ends to lead 8 – 2, and were feeling quite chuffed. They then continued to get the better of their opponents to lead 14 – 6 at the halfway stage and looked in control of the game. However, Steven fired up his team and they got to within five shots with one end to play. However, with two shots on the last, Chris’ team got home 20 – 13. Rowena kept pressure on the opposition as lead for the victors, while skipper Chris had a blinder of a game!
Rowena and Chris lit up the green with a winning display!
In the game on rink 11, two nonagenarians Bill Meredith and Gordon unflappable Lewis along with Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt did battle against Jill Harwood, Dave Charlesworth and Mike ‘phlegmatic’ Holmewood. The scores were level at 4 all after five ends, and the sides were still tied at 9 all after ten. In a tight one, there was little between the teams until Gordon’s team notched up a blistering five shotter on the fourteenth end and took a three shot lead. Far from done, Mike’s team had edged to the lead by the seventeenth, but with Gordon at the helm to steady the ship, team Lewis won the last four ends. Victory to the old guys (sorry Graham!) by 20 – 16.
Bill and Gordon, two ninety year olds blitzed the younger ones!
In the final match, Michael ‘fish’ Hook, Ian ‘cool’ Duncan and Owen ‘wily’ Williams faced off against Charles Coode, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the maestro Robin Staples. Owen’s team leapt out of the blocks to lead 7 – 1 after four ends and have the opposition scratching their heads. Apparently, the scratching helped Robin’s team greatly, as they won nine of the next ten ends to roar to a handsome lead of 20 – 8. Comfortable, yes, well . . . perhaps, well . . . possibly, well . . . not sure, well . . . NO! In an astonishing back half Owen’s team won the last seven ends to turn the game around. They edged their opponents out 21 – 20 in a game that looked bedded down after fourteen ends!
Owen, the wily one dragged his team back from the jaws of defeat to victory!
